    • ~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~
An extremely  rare and GORGEOUS  textile . One of the most incredible textiles I have seen.~ this amazing textile is a French indigo resist-dyed quilt, double sided with resist printed back and front!~  These large textiles are challenging to photograph, so please do email me if you would like further photographs!~   This textile dates from the late 18th century , (c1780)and was most likely, printed in Rouen or Provence. These wonderful indigo-resist dyed textiles are rare even in France, a wonderful textile find. The design on each side, is equally as stunning as the other. The indigo resist side has been pieced in places and has a charming small scale floral patch , this small fabric patch  dates from the early 1800's. This quilt has the most wonderful uneven tones in the printing , a once in a lifetime find. This quilt has a dense cotton batting in between the two wonderful layers.   Most fabric printing methods are designed to apply a dye to  wherever the figures fall, however with a dye-resist method, it is exactly the opposite: what is printed in the end will be left bare. Using the resist-printing method, a paste ( usually a wax substance) is printed on to the cloth using hand carved wooden blocks. Next, the cloth is dyed ( in this case it was dyed using indigo blue) and finally the resist substance is removed to reveal the masked pattern. The indigo front cloth of this textile is a medium open woven , tabby weave linen and cotton blend. The backing of this textile is also a resist printed cloth! Spectacular circular wreath design. This cloth was resist printed and the floral areas were block printed to add color to the design. This cloth too is a medium open weave , linen and cotton blend fabric. It is not only remarkable to find such an early, double sided resist printed quilt, it is as remarkable to find one of this size!~ This textile is sure to become the pride and joy of it's new owner. Please email me with any questions or further photographs ~
MEASUREMENTS: This textile measures 108 inches by 98 inches ( 9 feet by 8.16 feet) .

CONDITION: This textile is in as found, unwashed condition with light storage dust. It's best to work side by side with condition so I'll begin with the indigo resist side: This side has a patch, covering over an area of wear ( please see photographs) There are also some smaller patches on this side adding to its charm. You can see from the photographs there are areas of wear with small holes in larger patches. Perhaps best for me to send photographs directly to help understand these areas better! ~ There are some tears and stains on this side also.
Madder resist side: This side has survived in remarkable condition and most likely was the front of this quilt!~  There is a stain on the left side ( please see photographs) . There is a two inch hole near the middle and some smaller holes also on on this side. However, generally has survived in remarkable condition for its age. Please do email and I will send photographs directly in order to see the condition as photographs are always the best way to assess the condition clearly!~

I politely request that all items be paid for within 7 days. The individual condition will be described to the best of my ability however, often flaws are inherent in vintage and antique textiles. Please email me if condition is vital to your purchase and we can discuss condition in detail. When describing my textiles, I use my best judgment, knowledge and experience to estimate their age. I have had many years of research and hands on experience with these wonderful textiles. I describe items as Antique if I estimate the age to be 100 years of age or greater. EBay currently define an antique as dating to 1930 or earlier. I describe items as Vintage, as per the dictionary definition, if I feel the textile has age, or is outdated or old-fashioned, dating from the past. If I use both Antique/Vintage when describing a textile, it is because I feel the textile is most likely 100 years of age or greater, but may fall just short of that date. I often work in collaboration with other colleagues and textile specialists to ascertain the approximate age of my textiles, however ultimately any statement of age is a matter of best judgment only~*~I also use my best professional judgment to ascertain the fiber content of my textiles, using sight and feel and where possible historical information and context to help me to identify plants used in a particular era. However, because my textiles are old, any statement of fiber content is again always only my best professional assessment. ~*~ I feel privileged and honored to bring these textiles to you, I sincerely thank you for your interest ~*~
