Rare Vintage Daughter of Charity Doll

Plastic, Wool, Cotton

Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul
Rare, Vintage Doll dating from the 1920's

Offering an extremely rare turn of the century doll clothed in the traditional habit and cornette of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. In 1633, a French widow named Louise de Marillac and a French priest named Vincent de Paul founded the Daughters of Charity to serve the poor of France.

This doll is dressed in a reproduction of the original 1633 habit, and is handcrafted in painstaking detail, from the stiffly starched cornette and collar to the undergarments.  It is 100% accurate in historical accuracy.

This particular piece was created by a now deceased Daughter of Charity during the World War I and sold to raise money for American troops overseas.  Seller inherited it from great grandparents.

A one of a kind artifact for collectors of religious items that cannot be found anywhere.  Modern Daughter of Charity dolls do not even come near to the extraordinary detail in every piece of this habit...the pleated underskirt, pin point apron with traditional black ribbon, chaplet with green silk bow, and distinctive doublet with black lined sleeves  The haircap beneath the cornette is an exact replica of the one worn by the Sisters.

Saint Vincent de Paul founded the order to serve the sick poor and were not required to remain in their cloister.  The clothing on this doll reproduces the original 1633 garments..those that ordinary middle-class women of the period wore.

The starched cornette became a distinctive feature of the Daughters of Charity, making them one of the most widely recognized religious orders by their habit.

The width of the cornette pictured is 14 inches, with the total height of the doll standing at 22 inches.

The wearing of the cornette and habit was discontinued by the order on September 20, 1964, and replaced by a modern design.
