Item specifics

Partially stocked: Patented in 1909

Please see all 12 photos.

Offered for sale is a fully functional and partially stocked Boye Rotary Case for dispensing sewing machine needles, shuttles and bobbins for many different brands of sewing machines.

Patented in 1909, this dispenser was sold to stores around the country.  This case is from my own family’s general store, which was founded in 1902 in rural South Carolina and remained in operation until 1987.  (Collectors:  I would be pleased to offer additional information about the store’s history.)

In order to find what you needed, you would look around the edge for the particular brand of sewing machine to find the corresponding needle, shuttle or bobbin size.  Then you would turn the arrow to the matching spot and open the case door to find the tube or bobbin container you needed.  When that size was running low, the store clerk would just open the drawer and refill the holes with replacement tubes.  This case is in completely original condition.  No effort has been made to clean or restore it, so it has some dust and rust but operates as it should.  One of the four "feet" of the stand is missing (see photo) and there is some damage, probably from termites or the like, on the underside of the stand not visible when it is upright (see photo).

These rotary cases are seen from time-to-time on Ebay.  What makes this item unique is that is sits on the original stand which includes a drawer for refills (see photos).  Plus, it comes with many of the original items – 123 tubes of needles, 4 shuttles, and 25 bobbins.  According to the International Sewing Machine Collectors’ Society, the dispenser came with 144 tubes of needles, 24 shuttles, and 72 bobbins and sold for $61.96 in 1910.  These tubes of needles today often sell for $5.00-$8.00 each on Ebay and elsewhere.  The shuttles sell for about $20-$30 each.  Some of the tubes are kind of stuck shut, but a gentle twist with pliers opens them easily.  Most tubes seem to contain 3 needles, but I’ve seen some with 4 and some with 2.

With the drawer closed, it measures about 18” by 18” and is 8” high.  The entire piece weighs about 19 pounds.  Shipping costs may vary depending on location of recipient and method of shipment, but I will work to find the most economical shipment method.  This will include shipping insurance and signature confirmation.

I will be pleased to answer any questions.  I am not a high-volume Ebay seller, but please be assured that your purchase will be handled promptly and with great care.  Thank you for shopping!

From the Company’s website:

Boye Needle was founded in 1906, when James H. Boye and two businessmen from the sewing machine business joined forces. Boye Needle Company was launched with a patented, revolving cabinet called the “Rotary Case”, which housed sewing machine needles, shuttles and bobbins suitable for a variety of home sewing machines. This was a tremendous innovation at the time as consumers had difficulty finding the correct needles and other replacement parts for their sewing machines.

The Rotary Case was very successful and supported Boye’s expansion into sewing machine parts and accessories such as belts, oil and screwdrivers along with sewing needles and sewing notions. In 1917, Boye introduced the first complete line of crochet hooks made in America. Through years of development, Boye became recognized as the premier supplier of crochet hooks and knitting needles. In 1989 Boye Needle was merged into Wrights.
