Item specifics

Material: Copper

I am offering this antique American folk art copper weathervane that is about 30 inches long and 15 3/4 inches tall.  It comes with the north, south, east and west directionals that are two pieces and they are 22 1/4 and 21 1/2  inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide.  It is made in the form of a running or trotting horse with a sulky and jockey.  The weathervane is copper that has a very nice patina with some areas having a green verdigris developing.  I thought that the directional pieces were cast iron because they look and feel like it but they do not attract a magnet so I'm not sure what metal was used.  I bought this weathervane about 18 years ago from the grandaughter of the man who had it on his house.  He passed away and she took it down to put a new roof on the house before she solds it.  She made it sound like it was on there for along time- like since the 1940's or 1950's.  I didn't keep it outside- it's been in my sunroom so it is fairly clean- just a little dusty in the hard to reach areas.  So I'm not exactly sure of the age but would guess it is c1930's or 40's?  There is wear here and there in the form of little dents and dings and the horses ears and the visor on the jockey's cap are bent a bit and the wheel are not perfectly round.  The horses body has depth- it looks like it was made from a 2-piece mold that was soldered together and it is hollow inside.  It is very charming and everyone loves it even if they aren't horse lovers.  It always gets alot of attention from visitors to my home.  You won't be disappointed if you decide to add this beautiful piece to your collection!
