Boston Musical Instrument Manufactory
NE Plus Ultra Three Star Cornet
Fresh from the estate of a professional musician, we offer this beautiful antique Boston cornet with silver plating. This company was formed by the joining of two companies, GRAVES & Co. and E. G. WRIGHT & Co. in 1869. The firm produced relatively few models of high quality brass instruments. Graves was, unfortunately, disabled by a stroke and left the company in 1870. In 1913, the company reorganized under the name of Boston Musical Instrument Company. Near the turn of the century, the company was renowned for its famous "Three Star Cornet"; one of the premier cornets available at the time and still today. This horn has an engraved mark on the bell with an ornate garland surround. The serial number on this piece is 11625 which is dating it around 1892. There are some minor scuffs and dings to the brass - especially on the rear-most tube (below the mouthpiece). There is also some expected wear to the silverplate and the brass can be seen through in spots where the horn was most handled. The mouthpiece is made by Vincent Bach Corp. #6C and there is an original extension bar that is 3 3/4" long. The lined case is leather covered and in very nice condition. We don't have the keys for the case locks. The case is newer than the horn but fits properly and looks to be better than average in quality. We are not musical instrument experts but we did have the horn professionally serviced to ensure that all valves and slides were working properly. We also had a musician play it and it sounded great to him (and us too). The cornet is 12 1/4" long and the bell is 4 7/8" diameter. We believe this horn to be a way better than average example. Still we start the bidding at $9.99 with no reserve so enjoy this good old fashioned auction. Hope for a bargain but don't let this beauty slip away for a song.
