An Ancient silver Roman Coin of the Emperor Gordian III (Marcus Antonius Gordianus Pius Augustus) dating to approximately 241 - 243 A.D.

The obverse with radiate and draped bust of the young Emperor, facing right. The legend reading:

IMP[erator] GORDIANVS PIVS FEL[ix] AVG[vstvs]

"Emperor Gordianus, Dutiful & Wise Augustus"

The reverse with Hercules, standing right resting on club, lionskin draped around his left arm. The legend reading:

VIRTVTI AVGVSTI

Diameter: 22 mm.

Weight: 3.70 g

In 238 Gordian became the youngest leader throughout the existence of the united Roman Empire at just 13 years old.

Gordian's youthful good looks and gentle nature, along with the untimely deaths of his grandfather and uncle and his own tragic fate at the hands of another usurper, (Philip the Arab) earned him the lasting esteem of the Romans. Despite the opposition of the new Emperor, Gordian was deified by the Senate after his death, in order to appease the population and avoid riots.
