Ancient Greek Terracotta Esfinge

Believed to be part of a funerary jar, this sphinx must be one of two that had to be placed back-to-back. The serene beauty of the creature's head, the shape of palmettes p feathers reflect Greek art fifth century BC.

This piece is the same type as those depicted in Athenian white-ground lekythoi of the fifth and fourth centuries BC. High:  16cm / long 22cm and 2 Kg. Condition overall looks good for the age. There is a stripe on the front that goes from the lower leg down,at this point the piece was link to join them. This repair or link of the two pieces, was made very many years or centuries ago (see emages), but there is a deep split. See photos and generate your own opinion.
