Up for sale is a rare and beautiful Alvarez Yairi double neck, DY87 guitar. Made in 1981 in Japan, and signed "K. Yairi," this, in my opinion, is one of the finest acoustic double necks ever made.

As you can see from the photos, only woods with beautiful grains and exceptional tone were used in the construction of this guitar, as you would expect from all Yairi guitars. Both the six and twelve strings necks sound fantastic, with deep resonance and that balanced, articulate tone Yairi guitars are known for. Both necks also play smooth and quick.

This guitar in particular has a Fishman pickup system; this system was already installed when I purchased the guitar a few years ago.

In my opinion, the guitar is in excellent shape, especially for a 32 year old instrument. Aside from the addition of the Fishman, one neck strap button is unoriginal. I'd describe it's condition overall as very, very clean. I'm happy to take more pictures, as well.

I've also read from a few sources that about a hundred of these double necks made it to the States. The quality and scarcity of Yairi guitars do not match the prices; my esteemed guitar tech remarked that this would easily be a $5,000 Martin.

This information is a from a Yairi catalog: ""An incredible amount of sound is available for the picking in this double necked beauty. All of Alvarez Yairi's stringent construction specifications are met in this guitar, so tone and strength aren't sacrificed for the dual-purpose DY87. The back and sides are made of the finest mahogany, the top of tight grained, responsive Canadian spruce. Both necks are double reinforced mahogany with adjustable steel rods. Fingerboards have been constructed of glass smooth ebony and ebony is used in the double bridge as well. The binding is celluloid; fret markers are pearl dots for the twelve string neck and snowflake markers for the six string. Thin contrasting wood strips are used as decorative inlay in the heads. A specially designed oval sound hole allows the most resonance for the two necks, and the top bracing is one-of-a-kind to achieve the strongest, yet most responsive top. Discriminating performers will appreciate the versatility of this superb instrument."

Both the picture in the catalog and my DY87 have snowflke markers on both necks. The catalog has pictures of Jon Anderson, Larry Groce and Alex Lifeson playing a DY87. Other performers shown playing Yairis in the catalog include Delaney Bramlett, Janis Ian, Hank Snow, Billy Cobham, Mike McDonald, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Juan Serrano, Moe Bandy, Loretta Lynn, J.C. Heartsfield, Charlie Louvin, James Henley, Michael Murphy, Hoyt Axton, Barbara Mandrell, Merle Travis, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Porter Wagoner, Tim Schmitt, Oliver, Billy Parker, and Larry Gatlin.

Shipping to anywhere in the U.S. should be about $50-60. I will ship internationally, but the buyer will have to pay the additional cost.
