Lion’s Tail

aka: Lion’s Ear

Leonotis nepetifolia

Lion's Tail Leonotis nepetifolia, from South Africa, is a robust Tender Subtropical Perennial in warm climates growing 4' to 8'.  Lion's Tail is an erect, loosely branched plant that can get 8’ tall in its growing season and holds its Flowers high above most other annuals and perennials to make it easier for you to watch the hungry Hummingbirds and Butterflies that congregate around them.  The stems are strongly angled (square in cross-section) and the leaves are in pairs opposite each other.  The leaves are smooth with coarsely toothed margins, triangular in shape and 2-5” long.

Looks Best Planted In Groups

The Main attraction of this Spectacular species is the Unique Showy Bright Red-Orange Flowers borne in rounded, compact clusters, 2-4” across, that encircle the stems so that it looks like the stems are growing right through the middle of the clusters. As the stems elongate, new flower clusters continue to develop above the older ones. A most unusual plant that will stand out in any garden . . . And a Great Conversation Piece

When The Lion's Tail is in Bloom it is a Knockout!

Lion's Tail is an excellent - super magnet for Hummingbirds as the Flowers produce copious amounts of nectar which also attracts Birds, Bees and Butterflies. The Hummingbirds will sip for longer than normal periods from one flower.  Each Tubular Flower is a Hummingbird’s Banquet . . . And, The Hummers keep coming back to the Pretty Orange Flowers all day long.

Extremely Showy Blooms

Lion's Tail is very easy to grow and prefers Full Sun to intermittent shade, and will do best in well drained loamy soils with plenty of compost added.  Lion's Tail Grows rapidly and vigorously with regular watering, but still hangs on during drought. It should be well watered in summer, but does not require much water in the winter months. Once established, they require little extra irrigation except in containers or extremely well drained soils. This Plant will look its best if the dead flowers are trimmed, and will still easily put on new growth and blooms. Lion's Tail is a fast growing tall plant that is slender in width and looks very attractive planted behind Salvias and Buddleias.

Seeds collected from my garden and germination tested. Open Pollinated.

Hardy in Zones 9 and above

Cooler climates can grow this outstanding plant as an Exotic Annual

A True Show-Stopper!

Leonotis nepetifolia Seed Germination

o    1 Select a planting site for Leonotis nepetifolia. The planting site should be in full sun, although Leonotis nepetifolia can tolerate partial shade.

o    2 Prepare the soil. Leonotis nepetifolia is relatively indifferent to soil types, as long as it has good drainage. Add peat moss or sand if you have heavy clay, in order to keep the soil loose.

o    3 Sow Leonotis nepetifolia seeds directly onto the soil in the spring once the temperature stays above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of potting soil and keep the soil moist.

o    4 Water Leonotis nepetifolia seeds with 1 to 2 inches of water when the topsoil dries out. This plant is hardy over a wide range of watering conditions and recover quickly from drought.

o    5 Fertilize Leonotis nepetifolia once per month with a general fertilizer during the growing season. This plant is tolerant of poor soil, but grows better when the soil is rich.
