An interesting film in Bogart's career as it was made in 1942,just prior to his ascent to being one of the biggest stars of Hollywood's 'golden era". after playing the heavy for almost 10 years in one gangster picture after another,Bogart is now the good guy. Supposedly he is court-martialed and leaves the United States army in disgrace a few months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. on his way to a new job and life in South America, he encounters one of his usual foils in Sydney Greenstreet on a ship bound for Panama. Bogart soon encounters the shapely Mary Astor as well as a nest of heavies who appear to be Japanese agents. Can Bogey possibly prevent the Japanese plot to invade America?. what is fascinating about this picture apart from it's excellent cast, is that this movie was made without any possible knowledge of the outcome of the second world war. Better than average spy/wartime drama as we watch Bogart on his way to becoming a true movie iconRead full review
I discovered Bogart and Astor when I first watched the Maltese Falcon. In the 25 years that have followed I have enjoyed many, many movies starring one or the other of these spectacular actors. Don’t know how this film escaped me until just a few months ago. The chemistry between them in this movie is fantastic! They both embraced the comedic scenes in this film. I know I will watch and re-watch this gem.
