AUGUST POLLMAN 5 STRING MANDOLIN BANJO~ca.1888~NO RESERVE

I purchased this instrument about 25 years ago and paid the amount of my opening bid. It has a wonderful soft sound which was great for playing Irish tunes. I play old time banjo so this was a natural match. Here is a brief description which I mostly copied from Musurgia.com:

August Pollmann 5-string banjo c. late 1800's, made at the J.H. Buckbee factory in New York, natural varnish finish, spruce top, brazilian rosewood back, side, fret board, and 5 peg tuners. This unusual instrument consists of a five-string banjo-style neck on a flat-topped wooden body roughly the size and shape of a mandola. A product of the late Nineteenth Century boom in banjos and mandolins, this makes a claim to being both at once! Played like a 5-string banjo, it has a delicate and enchanting sound more like a small guitar or lute. Very high quality materials and construction throughout. The solid spruce X-braced top Pear shaped body has back and sides of beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood. A brand on the backbrace reads "Pat. May 3, 1887". Inlayed in the headstock is a mother of pearl medallion with no writing left on it. This is a great instrument for the turn-of-the (last) century banjo enthusiast, a perfect-playing example of an unusual crossbreeding experiment in American Lutherie!

Overall length is approximately 33 3/4inches, 10 1/4 in. wide at lower bout, and 3 in. deep taken at the end block. It has 18 frets and the finger board is 15 3/4in. long. This banjo is exactly how I received it except that I added violin fine tuners, which has nicked the area as a result. I believe the tail piece is a replacement. There are 2 old repaired cracks: one running down the middle of the back which has slightly opened on the lower half and should probably be reinforced, and the other is on the front from the sound hole to the bridge. This one is sealed. Otherwise, this banjo is incredibly sound in structure with no other open seams or cracks. The top is perfectly flat and there is basically no wear on the fingerboard. Cosmetically, there are quite a few nicks and scratches throughout, and it can use a good cleaning which would bring out the wonderful rosewood grain. There is no reserve. Stand not included. Guaranteed as described and pictured. 6% MD sales tax if applicable. CONTACT MUST BE MADE WITHIN 3 DAYS OF AUCTION END, PAYMENT WITHIN 7, OR ITEM WILL BE OFFERED TO BACK UP BIDDER. Shipping is based on the weight and dimensions of the package, and is then calculated by e-bay SO REMEMBER TO TYPE IN YOUR ZIP CODE. Thank you for bidding.
