Asia Recens Summa Cura Delineata Auct. Iud Hondio.

 Description: Stricking and detailed very rare issue with "carte à figures" of whole Asian Continent, based on the cartography of Jodocus Hondues and published by Pierre D'Avity, in his work "Les estats et empires du monde". The map shows a lot of topographical details as well as cities, villages, rivers, lakes, mountains and islands. The title is inside a decorative cartouche flanked with two inhabitants. To top right there is another cartouche. To the top there are 6 city views: Famagusta, Rhodes, Damascus, Jerusalem, Aden and Hormuz. Map with Five panels on each side show figures in national costume. Three galleons are placed on the sea.

Dimension: Paper size approx.: cm 55,3 x 41,2
Condition: Very strong and dark impression on thin paper. Paper with chains. Uncolored as issued. All the margins missed. Map browned. Map washed. Conditions are as you can see in the image.
Cartographer: Jodocus Hondius born 1563 in Ghent (Flanders) and grown up there. He became a globe maker and map engraver. In 1593 set up his business in Amsterdam after he spent some years in London. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer or Speed. Hondius bought the plates of Mercator in 1604, added around 40 maps and published the Atlas first 1606 still under Mercators name. After his death 1612 in Amsterdam, the business was carried out by his sons Jodocus II and Henricus.

Writer: Pierre d’Avity (1573-1635) was born in Southern France. He studied law in Toulouse, served as an officer in the French army and at spare time compiled, translated and systemized historical news. The author participated in several historico-geographical expeditions
