This DVD contains 3 live performances by the celebrated pianist Artur Rubinstein. Recorded more than half a century ago when Rubinstein was in his 60s, these performances provide the opportunity to not only hear but also see one of the greatest pianists - a wonderful experience not to be missed and an exciting addition to CD and LP collections of Rubinstein. The first performance is an at-home recital from 1950 in which Rubinstein introduces the works -- Mazurka in C sharp minor (op 30/4), Scherzo in C sharp minor (op 34), Nocturne in F sharp (op 15/2) and Polonaise in A flat (op 53). [For those who are interested in collecting such historic footage, this performance is also contained on the DVD 'Historic film of Rubinstein in performance'.] The second and third performances are from the Festival of Music, telecast in 1956 and introduced by two well-known screen stars. The broadcasts are an abridged (by about 5 minutes) version of Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini by Rachmaninov with Showcase Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alfred Wallenstein, and another performance of Polonaise in A flat (op 53).Read full review
