Up for your consideration is this very rare STANDARD ADDING MACHINE CO. MODEL B FIRST 10-KEY ADDING MACHINE 1901. Great condition for being over 100 years old but not sure if it is operational and looks to be missing what I believe is the paper feed button or it is depressed inside. I am not sure how to open it so if anyone can help me there I can get pictures of the inside and see if the paper feed button is there as well. All levers work but need to be done in sequence somehow to make the numbers work and I have not figured that out yet either. Paper roll is inside still but not sure when it was put in. Have been looking on ebay for a few years for another and have not yet seen one, just the ads for one. More info on the machine and the person behind it if you search google. Picture 6 shows where the porcelain or real thick paint has seperated at a seam making it look like a crack but is actually a seam where the real thick coating cracked open. Weight prior to packaging is about 47 pounds so shipping cost is an over estimate and please wait to pay until I send a revised invoice showing correct shipping. An email from anyone with more knowledge on this item or how to open top would be greatly appreciated.

A significant departure from the popular full keyboard came when William W. Hopkins of St. Louis, invented the Standard in 1901. This machine manufactured by the Standard Adding Machine Co., had one row of 10 digit keys.

Standard Adding Machine Company was founded in the early 1900s and was the first company to release a 10-key adding machine. The machine was a breakthrough for its time because it dramatically modernized computing. Earlier key driven adding machines, like the comptometer, featured eight or more columns of nine keys, which made them cumbersome and costly and their operators prone to mistakes. The 10 keys were set on a single row.

The invention won an international grand prize during the 1904 World's Fair and was heralded as a "modern life preserver" in an office journal.

William H. Hopkins, the inventor of the Standard Adding Machine, was a minister. When he moved to St. Louis in 1885 he served as chaplain and then pastor of St. Louis Second Christian Church. He continued to invent during those years and to find better ways to make an adding machine. In the 1890s, he left Second Christian Church and became assistant editor of the company that published The Christian Evangelist.

The Standard Adding Machine Company released the first 10-key adding machine in between 1901 and 1903. William Hopkins filed his first patent on October 4, 1892. Hopkins' success led to competition. By 1915, other adding machine companies were vying for business. In 1916, Hopkins died, and his company began to decline.

Standard Adding Machine closed in 1921
