HERE IS AN ANTIQUE, MARTHA WASHINGTON SEWING STAND, OR TABLE.  IT IS SOLID, RED AND BROWN, MAHOGANY WOOD CONSTRUCTION, WITH ITS ORIGINAL MAHOGANY FINISH SHOWING SURFACE MARKS---AS EVIDENCE OF ITS AGE AND USE.  THIS SEWING STAND FEATURES A FLAT TOP; TWO LIFT TOP HINGED BINS ON EACH SIDE; THREE GRADUATED DRAWERS WITH ORIGINAL WOOD KNOBS; AND FOUR TURNED AND FLUTED LEGS THAT END IN BUN FEET.  THE TWO SIDE BINS ARE CONSTRUCTED OF SEVEN PANELS EACH.  EACH DRAWER IS DOVETAILED FRONT AND BACK.  THE FOUR LEGS ARE A PERMANENT PART OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS SEWING STAND/TABLE.  THIS PIECE IS CIRCA EARLY 1900's.   

 THIS SEWING STAND, OR TABLE MEASURES 29 1/4 INCHES HIGH; 27 3/4 INCHES LONG; AND 14 1/4 INCHES IN DEPTH.  THIS MARTHA WASHINGTON SEWING STAND, OR TABLE IS WELL CONSTRUCTED AND A VERY VERSATILE PIECE OF FURNITURE---FOR MANY DIFFERENT PLACES AND USES!!  IT WOULD LOOK NEAT BESIDE THAT FAVORITE CHAIR, NEAR THE FIREPLACE, OR AS A DECORATOR ACCENT PIECE OF FURNITURE ANYWHERE IN THE HOME OR OFFICE.  IT COULD BE USED INDIVIDUALLY SETTING OUT IN A ROOM AS A DISPLAY TABLE FOR A LAMP, PHOTO, GLASSWARE, OR STATUARY.  EVEN PROVIDES A 'HIDING PLACE' FOR SMALLS, JEWELRY, ETC.!!!  TRULY A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF MULTI-PURPOSE FURNITURE.

 THE ORIGINAL MAKERS LABEL IS FOUND INSIDE THE MIDDLE DRAWER: "W.K. COWAN FURNITURE COMPANY, HIGH GRADE FURNITURE, CHICAGO, ILL."  WILLIAM KENNETT COWAN WAS BORN IN 1869 AND DIED IN 1928.  HE STUDIED ARCHITECTURE EARLY IN HIS LIFETIME; WAS THE 'MASTER DESIGNER' FOR ALL PLUMBING FOR THE 1893 COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION IN CHICAGO; STARTED HIS FURNITURE COMPANY IN 1894; OPERATED HIS FACTORY AT 605 LAKE SHORE DRIVE(OHIO & ONTARIO STREETS); AND HIS RETAIL STORE AT 203-207 MICHIGAN AVENUE.  THE BUSINESS WAS SOLD IN 1916.
