You are bidding on an antique William L. Gilbert Amphion shelf or mantle clock.  This highly collectible clock was manufactured in Winsted Connecticut, and likely dates to around 1885.  The clock measures approximately 24 1/2" high by 16 3/4" wide by 5 1/2" deep.  As you can see, this clock features cut glass mirrored side panels and base as well as a nice ormolu mounted cut glass mirrored pendulum with grape vine details.  (As you can see, the side panels do have a some pitting on the mirrored backs.)  For its part, the door of the clock features beautifully reverse painted glass, in the motif of an intricate, drawn curtain.  As you can see from the detailed images, the tip of the minute hand appears to have broken off, so that it is currently shorter than the hour hand (my understanding is that replacing the minute hand is a relatively easy fix).  That being said, the great news is that when I wound the clock (which has an 8 day time and strike movement) up it immediately began running and keeping time after over 125 years!  The even better news is that the clock is chiming appropriately with a cathedral-like gong on the hour and half hour. The less good news is that the wooden case is damaged in a number of spots. Namely, it is missing the ornaments on the top right side of the clock, while the pieces of the top left side are loose/detached. (While I do have a number of the pieces that have detached from the clock (as pictured) and will provide them to you, they appear to be for support and not ornamentation.) The case (which may have been re-stained at some point) also has a number of scratches and minor paint splashes on the top of the case, and could use a thorough cleaning.  In other words, the case has seen better days, but the clock is working and its original glass and a truly fabulous pendulum.  The way I see it, there just aren't that many of these highly sought after clocks around after 125 years, and signs of age and use are to be expected.  I think that the fact that it works is a huge plus and that the cosmetic issues can probably be overlooked or remedied if you are bothered by them.  It's your call though; I am not going to do anything to the case as I just don't have the expertise and I would hate to do anything to hurt this magnificent clock.  Thanks for looking.
