Ferdinand Barbedienne’s (1810 - 1892) casts are renowned for their exceptional high quality. The firm, located in Paris, originally called Collas & Barbedienne, specialized in reproductions of antique and modern sculptures and eventually employed about 300 artists and workers, who produced as many as 1,200 subjects, including works by Michelangelo and Antoine-Louis Barye. as well as notables like Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin.  He became President of the Reunion of Bronze Makers in 1885, a post he held until 1885. The firm was the most technically advance of its kind and was responsible for casting many of Paris' and the nation’s public monuments, interior decorations and architectural bronzes. He won the Grand Medal of Honor in Paris in 1855. This Clock is really an attestation to the quality of the work produced by the firm.  It is in excellent condition overall, but there is some chipping on the enamel clock face around the fine tuning mechanism just below the number 60.

This is an Extraordinarily Gorgeous Piece and Would Make a Welcome Addition to the Family Treasure !!

From 1851 the firm, by then known as Barbedienne, received numerous medals at international exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London. Barbedienne’s work in enamel, which was at the forefront of the revival of enamelwork in France in the 19th century, was shown for the first time at this exhibition (e.g. gilt metal vase with champlevé enamel, c. 1862; London, V&A). In 1886 he was awarded the Jean Goujon Gold Medal by the Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale. This clock is a stunning masterpiece. It chimes on the hour and on the 1/2 hour and the clock mechanism automatically adjusts the chimes to changes in the time.  There is not need to manually adjust the chimes when changing the hands on the clock as the clock mechanism syncs the chimes automatically (a 19th century marvel). Also included are two keys.
