ART DECO FRENCH PIERROT LAMP
Another fabulous French lamp we purchased several months from the West Hollywood estate of a passionate Art Deco/Art Nouveau collector. The estate had catalogued over 400 pcs from his 50+ yrs of collecting, many of the larger pieces were donated to the Art Department of his Alma Mater. We're thrilled to have purchased some unique and scarce period pieces from this estate.
DESCRIPTION: Antique French Art Deco Pierrot Harlequin Figurine Table Lamp. Among other things, artists from this era drew inspiration from famous Italian and French plays. Pierrot is a stock character of pantomine and Commedia dell'Arte whose origins began in the late 17th-century Italian troupe of players performing in Paris. The Pierrot spelter lamp has been lovingly restored with Venetian golden bronze wash. The face and hands are ivory colored enamel. The Pierrot has a completative gaze while sitting down strumming his guitar. It is in excellent antique condition and perfect working order. The molded figurine and ribbed base are distinctively French. The light comes from one large round light bulb with a string of gradient crystal beads around the globe. There is an on/off switch behind Pierrot. Lamp is an unique and special piece, becoming scarce and almost impossible to find.
ABOUT PIERROT: After the First World War, the Pierrot was celebrated and promoted by Parisian dealers and writers, and became a figure of admiration for a new generation of painters and intellectuals, including the young André Breton (who later became the figurehead of Surrealism). Derain's ability to synthesise traditional subjects and genres with his own milieu was a characteristic of his unique style and contributed to the popularity of his works. In the large-scale work Harlequin and Pierrot, silent musicians play stringed instruments amid a barren landscape. Their austere gaze adds to an atmosphere of melancholy and stillness. These characters are from the Italian tradition of commedia dell'arte, a kind of travelling pantomime theatre which emerged from Italy during the fifteenth century, and continuing in France, Belgium, and other European counties in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
