Very early Electric Candle Stick Light / Flash Light or Chamber Stick,
manufactured by Ever Ready
The first of anything new always looked like the last of the old. The
first Railroad carriages looked like horse drawn carriages, or a more
recent example, the first Digital Cameras looked like 35mm SLR Cameras. It
does not surprise that the first Electric Lights looked like Candle Sicks.
Of course there were the arc lamps earlier which looked like Gas fixtures.
The light here offered was manufactured starting in 1899 and was
discontinued in 1904.
This early Ever Ready battery powered candle light has a base made of oak
wood, has a cast iron handle and forged leaves. The candle stick holding
the flame shaped light bulb is glass. I drop it once, the light is
destroyed! I'm sure this accounts in part why these lights are so rare!
There is a switch to turn the period light bulb on, and the period light
bulb looks like a carbon filament bulb, probably manufactured by Edison.
The bottom cover, or battery compartment cover, is made out of three
pieces of wood; unfortunately one is missing. It is a straight piece of
wood and any carpenter can easily make one for you. There is also a crack
in the top of the wooden box. This crack occurred as the wood contracted
during the winter month when the air is dry and will disappear during the
summer when the wood absorbs some moisture. See picture #9.
The candle holder is made of cast iron and forged iron, the candle is a
piece of white or milk glass. The base measures 4-3/4 by 3-34 inches and
the top of the light bulb is 10 inches from the surface on which the light

These lights are almost impossible to find, this is probably the only
opportunity for many to enhance their collection of early flashlights,
early electric engineering, or scientific instruments. Good luck!
