Offered here is this antique hardcover book titled "Nature For Its Own Sake", The First Studies in Natural Apperances by John Charles Van Dyke. This first edition book is unsigned and written by John Charles Van Dyke. This book was published in 1898 by Charles Scribner's & Sons. The book has 292 pages. It is in good condition and without a dust jacket. The spine is intact and all pages are connected to the spine. The book has a few stains and toning around the edge of the book (see pics). There is some discoloration in places and some small patches of foxing here and there. There is some wear/fraying at the top edges of the spine. There is some writing at the beginning of the book from the previous owners but some of the writing is smudged from moisture and is illegible (see pics). The book measures 7 5/16" tall, 4 15/16" wide and 1 3/16" thick. The hardcover is a dark green color cloth. Overall a very nice book and a 1st edition as well.
Van Dyke was born in 1856 (New Brunswick, NJ) and died in 1932 (New York, NY). He went on to become a highly respected Art Critic and The First Professor of Art Historian at Rutgers University.
In his own words Van Dyke describes what this book is about; "Painters or writers, with their truth or falsity of statement, are not my present concern. What then is the object of the book? Simply to call attention to that nature around us which only too many people look at every day and yet never see, to show that light, form, and color are beautiful regardless of human meaning or use, to suggest what pleasure and profit may be derived from the study of that natural beauty which is everyone's untaxed heritage, and which may be had for the lifting of one's eyes".
