NATIONAL AND ICS FLAGS - GUARANTEED TO HAVE FLOWN FROM A MARITIME VESSEL
We have come into possession of many maritime national and ICS flags and pennants and need to reduce our inventory. Most of the flags and pennants are pre-1990 and have been salvaged from shipyards where the ships on which they flew were disassembled, and all the maritime items such as these flags were put in storage. We were able to obtain many of these old maritime flags.
The flags and pennants are mostly 4 x 6 feet or larger so they could have been seen from a great distance away. The national flags usually flew from the stern; the code flags and pennants from the mast. Many are in very fine condition but many also show the months of flying from a ship and are priced accordingly. Some show the wear received flying from the stern which often was the area of the exhaust; those flags have some dark fumes residue on them but still look fine flying. How long each individual flag was used is not known; some show more wear than others. Most of the flags are either cotton,
nylon, or wool, with a few being polyester. If the flag is polyester,
we will indicate as such. Since many flags today are made of polyester,
they are considered less desirable by users and collectors. However,
the polyester flags and pennants we sell come with a history of use not
found with other polyester "knock-offs."
The national flags are in the best condition. They have been "refreshed" to remove any of the musty storage smells and will look fine wherever they are flown. These might include some out-of-date flags and flags of countries that no longer exist. As each flag is listed, specifics about the flag and its condition will be given.
Being offered in this listing is a merchant/maritime flag of AMVER. AMVER, or Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System, is a
worldwide voluntary reporting system sponsored by the United States Coast Guard. It is a computer-based global ship reporting system used
worldwide by search and rescue authorities to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at
sea. With AMVER, rescue coordinators can identify participating ships in the
area of distress and divert the best-suited ship or ships to respond.
Participating in AMVER does not put ships under any additional obligation to
assist in search and rescue efforts, beyond that which is required under international law. (wikipedia)
This flag is 26 x 44 inches, which makes it somewhat smaller than most maritime flags but large enough to be seen at sea. The flag is made of nylon, which would be an appropriate material for flying from a ship in all kinds of weather. The flags were made with blue, purple, or yellow silk-screening. This one is blue and the color remains dark and true. There are no holes or tears. The brass metal grommets are still attached. There's some barely discernible storage soil on the halyard edge of the flag; it's so light, the camera would not pick it up. Notwithstanding, this is a very nice, clean and somewhat unusual flag. It would make a fine gift, an addition to any collection, or a decoration for a dorm or bedroom wall.
Your collectible flag will be sent to you carefully folded and wrapped along with a certificate giving you some information about the flag and certifying your purchase. You will not be buying a cheap, dirty, torn, holey, or smoke-reeking flag sent to you unceremoniously stuffed in an envelope, although people are paying high prices for just such flags! This flag is a collectible and is ready for you to own and display proudly.
The flag comes with a signed, dated, and embossed certificate (see sample, yours will be for AMVER) and is ready to be flown, given as a gift, or kept as a collectible.
