ACR Electronics EPIRB & PLB Authorized Battery Replacement Center

Batteries for ACR Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) should be replaced every five years to ensure proper functioning. Turnaround time for EPIRB services averages 1-3 days from receipt.

ACR Electronics no longer conducts battery replacement of ACR EPIRBs on its premises. These services are now required to be made by ACR Authorized Battery Replacement Centers.

When shipping your EPIRB for battery replacement, please be sure to remove and include the antenna by following these instructions:

  1. Gently Remove the antenna by unscrewing at the base.
  2. Secure antenna to the body of your EPIRB with rubber band or tape prior to packaging.

ACR Electronics “Useful Life” Policy:

Stock batteries for most models of ACR EPIRB subject to the following ACR Electronics “Useful Life” Policy:

Products Affected: This policy applies to safety electronic products including, SARTs, EPIRBs, and VHF Radios manufactured by ACR Electronics in Fort Lauderdale, FL, hereinafter referred to as Products.

Preamble: Safety electronics, unlike other types of electronics, cannot be used until they fail. Their only use is in an emergency when they must work. Given the unknown nature of the cumulate effect of extremes in usage, storage and handling that safety electronics can be subjected to over time we feel it is important to establish an interval after which these products cannot be safely relied upon to perform as required in an emergency. While it can vary based on many unknowable factors, we believe the typical useful life of a well maintained safety electronic product is no more than 17 years. After which the product's useful life will have expired and it should be permanently removed from the beacon population or relegated to back-up status.
These products require regular service every 5 years. In addition to battery replacement, this service extends the operating life of the Products by replacing critical components and those that can under certain circumstances degrade more quickly; such as o-rings, activation seals, etc. Products that are not serviced at regular intervals of 5-years, +/- 6 months, may not perform as expected if needed. A lack of service or improper service can cause a beacon’s useful life to expire prematurely.

Policy: The typical service life of a properly maintained Product is limited to 12 years from date of manufacture. Products that are 12 years and 1 month or older from date of manufacture will not be serviced by ACR or our Battery Replacement Centers. A Product that is 12 or less years old from date of manufacture will be serviced as long as the unit appears fit to be placed back into its final operational cycle. Service includes the replacement of those items that must be replaced at service intervals and the verification that the device appears to be in good mechanical and electrical working condition by an ACR authorized service technician.

Disclaimer: ACR and our Battery Replacement Centers reserve the right to refuse to service any Product for no reason. ACR products are designed to withstand repeated exposure to sun, humidity, temperature extremes and salt fog. However, while ACR can choose to repair/replace any product at our discretion, ACR is not obligated to service Products that have been abused or subjected to excessively abusive environments such that the mechanical or electrical integrity of the unit appears to have been compromised. ACR retains the sole right to determine if a product has been abused.

Effective Date: This policy goes into effect immediately and applies to all Products being sold at this time and those that are in the field.


Q. How do I know when the battery is due for replacement?

A. It depends which unit you have, but there is a battery expiration date label on every PLB or EPIRB. Look for “battery needs to be replaced if used or by date shown” on the body of the unit.

Q. Can I buy a battery from you and replace it myself?

A. No. The battery of any EPIRB or PLB needs to be replaced by an ACR Certified Battery Replacement Center (BRC), where trained technicians will perform this service. The battery cannot be purchased by the end user. This is a life saving device and you need to have the tools, hardware and software to perform a battery replacement. Full functional testing is done on the unit, after the battery is replaced, to make sure that the unit will last another 5 years in the field.

Q. What will happen if I do not replace the battery every five years?

A. The chances of surviving a life threatening situation is greatly diminished if proper care and maintenance is not given to a beacon.

Q. Do I have to replace the battery if the beacon goes off by mistake and why?

A. Yes, as this is a lifesaving device it should be diligently maintained to perform as specified. For this unit to transmit for the full 24 or 48 hours it will need a new battery as any inadvertent activation will deplete the existing battery.

Q. Why must I replace the beacon’s battery at 5 years when it has an 11 year lifetime?

A. The battery does not have an eleven year “useful” life; it has an eleven year SHELF life. Once you install a battery in an EPIRB or PLB, current is being drawn when you self test the unit during the 5 year “replacement” life. There is also a minute current (in the micro amp range) being drained from the battery, in the “rest state” of an EPIRB or PLB , during the full 5 year period of the battery’s stated life. The battery is guaranteed to last the full specified period of 24 or 48 hours if activated in an emergency, any time during the 5 year replacement life. When the “replacement due date” is past, the activation period of an EPIRB will start to decline and cannot be guaranteed any longer.

We carry a limited stock of batteries to ensure a five year guarantee on every replacement we perform. Turnaround times may vary if stock is not available at the time of service.

Please be aware that any EPIRB or PLB sent for repair with a cracked or fractured housing will have to be sent to ACR Electronics in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for replacement, which may extend the turnaround time.

The Customs Value for return shipments is the actual amount paid for battery replacement service. Any VAT or other customs taxes assessed by the receiving country are the responsibility of the customer.
