ABI 3900 High Throughput DNA Synthesizer, a versatile instrument that synthesizes oligomers rapidly and economically. Designed for laboratories engaged in production-level synthesis, this new instrument can synthesize up to 288 primer-length oligonucleotides in nine hours. It easily accommodates both labeled and unlabeled oligos in a choice of scales, ranging from 40 nmol to 1.0 mol. An economical system, the 3900 synthesizer lowers running costs by increasing synthesis efficiency with optimized reagent delivery.

With genetic analysis and PCR applications expanding rapidly, custom oligo suppliers and pharmaceutical/genomic researchers require a flexible, robust, high-throughput instrument. To meet that need, PE Biosystems has entered into a strategic licensing agreement with Northwest Engineering of Alameda, CA, to release the ABI 3900 High Throughput DNA Synthesizer. A compact, bench-top instrument, the 3900 system features parallel, unattended, 48-column synthesis and <5-minute cycle times/48 couplings. The instrument, which uses proprietary FastPhoramiditeâ chemistry and polystyrene supports, synthesizes primers, probes, and sequences >50-mers. A convenient PC controller allows automatic transfer of sequences, functions, and cycles to the 3900 synthesizer.
