|Seller Notes:||“There is no seam (as there often is on after casts) and there are remnants of a degraded and blackened thick lacquer, probably applied in the late 19th century. Where the lacquer has been removed the bronze shows all the expected signs of wear and natural oxidation due to age. There is also excellent natural wear to the base and the interior.”|
A fine Dutch (Deventer) bronze mortar by Henryck Ter Horst 1638. Cast with a frieze of cherubs and vases in the classical taste beneath another frieze of vine leaves. Also with twin dolphin handles and cast inscription “HENRYCK TER HORST ME FECYT AO 1638”. This is a very well recorded form of mortar by a celebrated founder of the 17th century. As well as originals, there are many later cast examples and copies. We firmly believe this to be a 17th century original. There is no seam (as there often is on after casts) and there are remnants of a degraded and blackened thick lacquer, probably applied in the late 19th century. Where the lacquer has been removed the bronze shows all the expected signs of wear and natural oxidation due to age. There is also excellent natural wear to the base and the interior. A very closely related example (notably with the E in HENRYCK depressed as in our mortar) is presently on offer with the Denver dealership Eron Johnson at 3,250 US. Entact in good condition with traces of black lacquer.
