Best Channels

Channels in Green are good choices that have minimal overlap,
Red are bad choices that overlap too much, and
White are uncommonly used channels that should only be used in substitute of channel 11.

Picking a Channel
Best to first check the wireless signals that are being broadcast in your area/neighborhood.
To do this, use one of the Wi-Fi Scanners below.
Look at all the AP's that are broadcasting nearby and use this information to pick your channel.

You may want to experiment with different channels but it is recommended
to keep your control channel set to either Mixed, 1, 6, or 11 so that you minimize interference for yourself and your neighbors.
If the Wireless Site Survey shows no other AP's being broadcast in your area then you are pretty much free to pick any channel.

The 5 GHz Band is an excellent option for streaming media in the home or even broadcasting your signal long distances.
The 5 GHz Band is less cluttered; think of all the 2.4 GHz devices in the home that can interfere with your signal.
Baby monitors, wireless keyboard/mouse, speakers, cameras, headsets, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.

The latest 5 GHz Three Streaming Media allows you to connect at much faster speeds.

Wi-Fi Frequency Scope #1

The Wi-Fi Scope continually sweeps the area for internet connections.
Works great for adjusting any external antennas you have attached.
For example, if Blackstone is an open connection we will make adjustments
to our antennas with the objective of getting Blackstone in a range where
we can make a good connection:  -50 to -70 is ideal.  The closer to center the better.
The scope shows we are currently connected to a Linksys/DD-WRT Router at -53.

Look at all the signals that are being broadcast.  A jumble of activity.
RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication): The closer to -0 the better the signal, and the closer to -100 the worse.
 Notice two are open for public access but the signal from both is weak: -90.
So we will move about campus with our laptop to see if we can get a stronger signal. 


What is the difference between the WNDR4000 the WNDR3700 v. 3
and the WNDR3700 v. 2?

In a nutshell the WNDR4000 has five internal antennas while the
WNDR3700 v. 3 and v. 2 have four antennas.

The WNDR4000 supports streaming media at 450 Mbps.
WNDR4000 & WNDR3700 v.3 have the Broadcom 4718 Chip and the same Transmit Power which is impressive. 
The WNDR3700 v. 2 has the
Atheros 7161 Chipset.
The WNDR4000 is more expensive.
The Transmit Power on the WNDR3700 v. 2 is less than the other units (see below).
WNDR3700 v. 2 supports the DD-WRT Firmware, the rest do not as of this writing.
WNDR3800 is identical to the WNDR3700 v. 2 but has the new Genie Firmware preinstalled.  No CD ships with the unit.
Netgear's Firmware is excellent.
