What comes with the Kit
Three 7dBi RP-SMA OMNI-Directional Antennas

Nice fit!

Inside of the Netgear WNDR3400 v. 1

Before the modification

Four antennas with removable u.fl connectors (they just pop off)

Internal PIFA Antennas #2 and #4 are connected to the 2.4 GHz Band

Internal PIFA Antennas #1 and #3 are connected to the 5 GHz Band

All four of the Antennas are TX/RX (Transmit and Receive)

After the modification (v. 1)

With the four u.fl connectors we now have some interesting options as we add external antennas.

In the scenario above, we removed three internal antennas
and connected our 7dBi's to Antenna #1 (5 GHz) and two Antennas to #2 & #4 (2.4 GHz).

Other options:  Connect one antenna to the 2.4 GHz and two antennas to the 5 GHz Band.

Inside of the Netgear WNDR3400 v. 2

Before the modification

Four antennas with removable u.fl connectors (they just pop off).

Internal Foxconn Patch Antennas #2 and #3 are connected to the 2.4 GHz Band.

Internal PIFA Metal Antenna #1 and the Foxconn Patch #4 are connected to the 5 GHz Band

All four of the Antennas are TX/RX (Transmit and Receive)

After the modification (v. 2)

With the four u.fl connectors we now have some interesting options as we add external antennas.

In the scenario above, we removed three internal antennas
and connected one 7dBi Antenna to the 5 GHz Band and two Antennas to the 2.4 GHz Band.

Other options:  Connect one antenna to the 2.4 GHz and two antennas to the 5 GHz Band.

Netgear Firmware

Netgear Wireless Channel Settings
Notice all the cool Networking Options available in the left column.  Best Firmware in the business!
FCC limits the 802.11a Power Output for the Lower Channels (36-44) to 40mW (160mW EIRP)
The Transmit Power Output for the Upper Channels (149, 157) to 800mW (1600mW EIRP)
Security Settings:  To achieve the best performance with your wireless adapters,
NETGEAR (along with everyone else) recommends that you set your network's security option to WPA2-PSK.

Great menus to help you along!

Netgear Wireless Utility: Netgear WNDR3100 v. 2 Dual Band USB Adapter

We are connected to Netflix on Channel 149 (Upper Band), 5.4 GHz Band 802.11a operating at 300Mbps.
(An external Netgear Dual Band WNDR3100 v. 2 USB Adapter is connected to the laptop)
(Nice utility comes with the WNDR3100 v. 2 USB Adapter)
We are transmitting through two walls!

Wi-Fi Freqency Channel Scanner

Our Wi-Fi Scanner shows our Netgear WNDR3400 sending signals out on both frequency bands.
Simultaneous transmission on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Frequency Bands.
Notice we are connected to the 5 GHz Band, Channel 36, Lower Band.
(The signal being captured by the scanner above is being transmitted
to our Netgear Dual Band WNDR3100 v. 2 USB Adapter which is connected to our laptop)

Wireless Channels Guide

Table of 2.4GHz Channels

Best Channels

Channels in Green are good choices that have minimal overlap,
Red are bad choices that overlap too much, and
White are uncommonly used channels that should only be used in substitute of channel 11.

Picking a Channel
Best to first check the wireless signals that are being broadcast in your area/neighborhood.
To do this, use one of the Wi-Fi Scanners below.
Look at all the AP's that are broadcasting nearby and use this information to pick your channel.

You may want to experiment with different channels but it is recommended
to keep your control channel set to either Mixed, 1, 6, or 11 so that you minimize interference for yourself and your neighbors.
If the Wireless Site Survey shows no other AP's being broadcast in your area then you are pretty much free to pick any channel.

The 5 GHz Band is an excellent option for streaming media in the home or even broadcasting your signal long distances.
The 5 GHz Band is less cluttered; think of all the 2.4 GHz devices in the home that can interfere with your signal.
Baby monitors, wireless keyboard/mouse, speakers, cameras, headsets, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.

Wi-Fi Radar Scanners

Scanners work with Windows XP, Vista, and Win7 (32 and 64-bit)

When you purchase the Mod Kit don't forget to remind us

and we will send you a link to a FREE download for the two Wi-Fi Radio Scanners.

Wi-Fi Frequency Scope #1

The Wi-Fi Scope continually sweeps the area for internet connections.
Works great for adjusting any external antennas you have attached.
For example, if Blackstone is an open connection we will make adjustments
to our antennas with the objective of getting Blackstone in a range where
we can make a good connection:  -50 to -70 is ideal.  The closer to center the better.
The scope shows we are currently connected to a Linksys/DD-WRT Router at -53.

Look at the Menu above.
Lots of cool Testing options including a User's Guide,
Speed Test, Quality Test, Connection Test.

Connection Test
An excellent Diagnostic Test to look for Wi-Fi Networking Problems;
much better than Microsoft

Wi-Fi Freqency Scope #2

Wi-Fi Signal Strength

Nice chart for monitoring signal strength from various Internet connections in your neighborhood.

In the graph above we are Transmitting on Channel 6 at 300 Mbps.

(Note:  The 54 Mbps speed from 574 Chatham above might related to his Wireless Security Settings (WPA-TKIP))

Wi-Fi Radar Scanners are great for laptops too!

Photobucket

Wi-Fi Radar Scanner on campus
Look at all the signals that are being broadcast.  A jumble of activity.
RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication): The closer to -0 the better the signal, and the closer to -100 the worse.
Notice two are open for public access but the signal from both is weak: -90.
So we will move about campus with our laptop to see if we can get a stronger signal.
