We Have acquired a spectacular portfolio of late 19th Century photogravures depicting the very best in original paintings by notable American artists of that era. By the mid-1880s, American artists such as Winslow Homer and Elizabeth Gardner had come into their own as painters and were regularly lauded and displayed in various European salons. In recognition of this, New York Publisher D. Appleton and Company commissioned Recent Ideals In American Art, a massive study of the best American paintings in private collections. The series took over two years to complete, and all the photogravures were created from original photonegatives by Goupil & Co of Paris. The combination of Appleton's commitment to excellence in publishing and the masterful photogravure techniques of Goupil produced what is arguably the finest record of American paintings created up to that point. The rich tonality and intricate detail of the prints was so impressive that at the time, numerous art critics and collectors claimed that they preferred the engravings to the original pieces. The series was produced and released in the United States by subscription only between 1888 and 1891.

Condition: VERY NICE!! These 118+ year old prints are in excellent condition compared to similar photogravures from the same era and from the same series. There are some minor age-related toning and spotting to the paper which is mostly limited to the margins and which would be hidden by matting. Overall, these are very clean copies of an increasingly scarce vintage art piece.
