WHAT SIZE SURFBOARD TO BUY:

There is no exact science to finding the right board. The general rule is that the bigger the board, the easier it is to learn. The smaller boards will be more maneuverable but more challenging to learn on. Most people like to start out on a longboard (8-10 feet) because it's the easiest. Many people want to learn on a mid-sized board (7-8 feet or so) that is more maneuverable than a longboard but still great for learning. Then there are those athletic people that want to jump right in with a normal shortboard that will be much more challenging but super fun to do tricks on as you progress. A shortboard normally would be anything under 6'6" or so. If you want a shortboard you generally would want one that is at least four inches taller than you as long as you're of normal weight for your height. If you're larger you probably would want a bigger board. You can't go wrong by getting something bigger.
