Significant historical postcard showing the Jess Willard - Buffalo Bill Wild West Band for Season 1917 with Band Master Merle Evans, shows the band with a highly carvered tableau wagon as a backdrop.  Real photo unused AZO 4 triangles point up in corners of stampbox est. 1917.  Condition is very good+, sharp focus, border is embossed all the way around.  I think the Jess Willard - Buffalo Bill Wild West toured only this one year (1917) opening April 11 in Norfolk Virginia and closing Novemmber 3 at Jacksonville Florida.  It is important to note that Buffalo Bill was not with the show, as he died about 4 month earlier on January 10, 1917.  Jess Willard bought his wild west show title and what meager bits were left of it property.  Jess Willard was the heavyweight boxing champ, winning the title in 1915 from Jack Johnson.  Willard signed on with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show in 1916 and I think it was called the Wild West Alliance.  There is some confusion as to what role Buffalo Bill played with the 101 Ranch show in 1916 and 1917.  It is correct that he appeared briefly on the 101 and some historians claim he bought the show while it was stranded in Europe as WWI was about to break out, but not relevant to this postcard.  Merle Evans (1894-1987) was a noted cornet player and band conductor.  He was with the 101 Ranch as Director when Buffalo Bill was featured.  Based on this card, it appears he was with Jess Willard-Bufflao Bill in the 1917 season.  Evans went on to be with Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus for 50 years and was given the title "Toscanini of the Big Top".  This is 1 of many circus postcards that I will be offering on ebay for the next 2 to 3 years, watch my auctions if you are a carousel, merry-go-round, Ferris Wheel, amusement park, circus, carnival, playground, or device collector - many rare and one of a kind items.  I am listing on ebay as I am selling my 35-year collection of postcards.  Abbreviations: rppc = real photo postcard, est. = estimate my best guess, used = postal used, unused = not postal used but may have written message.   Winner pays $1.50 postage and handling cost.  Multiple auction wins shipped together to reduce total postage cost when possible
