In 1963, photographer Lewis Morley took an iconic photograph of Christine Keeler, the former model and showgirl whose involvement with the British minister of war led to the Profumo Affair scandal which brought down the Conservative government of Harold Macmillan. Keeler had agreed to pose nude but was feeling reluctant in the studio. Morley asked her to disrobe and sit front to back astride a chair resembling Arne Jacobsen's 3107 for Fritz Hansen, thereby obscuring most of her body while simultaneously creating a very suggestive pose. The resulting photograph is an iconic 20th century image, much imitated and satirized throughout popular culture and it made Morley and Keeler more famous than they already were, as well as the Jacobsen 3107 chair, even though the chair used in the iconic photo was actually a "Made in Denmark" knockoff which featured an aperture cut-out handle in the back to prevent it from being an infringing exact copy.
You are bidding on four of these "Made in Denmark" Keeler chairs. We have four additional chairs in the same condition (eight total), which we will be listing in the coming weeks.
A very interesting article on how Morley's photo came to be can be found here:
Because of the famous photograph, the knockoff chair design is just as famous as Arne Jacobsen's original 3107 chair, and ended up in a museum just like the higher pedigree original! We've included some examples of modern homages to the chair and the photograph, as well as a photo of the Jacobsen next to the Keeler chair. As you can see in the photo, they are similar but not identical by any means.
All of these chairs are in very good condition and display well. They are functional and sturdy and look great in all Mid-Century Modern settings. They could all use some TLC too, as they have little nicks and use wear, six missing rubber glides, and minor pitting to chrome bases (see photos). These were decommissioned from a college setting so they've seen a lot of use but they look good nevertheless.
