It is the Great American Story."
That said, this could have belonged to one of the Lincoln family descendent's or could have been acquired by the museum for display.
The gown in a saturated rich brown silk velvet with tight fitting bodice, bodice fully lined with stays and interior waist cincher, trimmed out in beadwork that may or may not be original to the piece, with hook and eye front closure with additional faceted jet ball buttons. Elaborately draped, box pleated and swagged skirt in satin/velvet with a intricate and colorful machine embroidered front panels, this beautiful fabric is likely French, skirt is fully lined with interior dust ruffle at hem with horizontal interior boning at the back of skirt in tracks for bustle support. The bodice has numerous stress/strain breaks at front waist area seams with some conservation work more or less successful, underarm's all good, The skirt waist band mostly all original with some replaced hook and eye, some weakness to waist band, otherwise skirt body is excellent. Chest measures 36", waist 26", sleeves 19", skirt waist 26", length 42".
