LEO FRANK Mary Phagan Murder Trial START 1913 in an Atlanta Newspaper
(Note: additional images are located below the description)
Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest: THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, Georgia, July 28, 1913
* Leo Frank murder trial begins
* Mary Phagan murder
* Best title to have in
The Leo Frank case has become well known in American history for several reasons, not the least of which being the several film and television depictions of the trial, but also because Frank was a Jewish-American businessman, his case turning the spotlight on antisemitism in the United States and led to the founding of the Anti-Defamation League. There was also the element of Frank being cast as a representative of Yankee capitalism, a rich northern Jew lording it over vulnerable working women in the South.
Leo Frank was the superintendent of the National Pencil Company in Atlanta, convicted on Aug. 26, 1913 of the murder of one of the factory workers, 13 year-old Mary Phagan. He would be found guilty and in 1915 sentenced to death, but the governor commuted the sentence to life imprisonment, to the great outrage of the citizenry. A mob of some 25 armed men kidnapped Frank from prison and hanged him.
This is a great issue, for not only is there good front page reporting on the beginning of the trial, the front page also features a photo of Leo Frank, headed "On Trial For Life Today". The one column heads at the top of the page include: "LEO FRANK'S TRIAL ON MURDER CHARGE BOOKED FOR TODAY" "Judge L. s. roan Announces That He Will Call Case at Nine O'Clock this Morning" "Lawyers Believe Jury Will Be named In Day" "Legal Representatives Take Good Rest on Sunday in Preparation for Struggle That Begins Today" (see). The text begins: "After weeks of preparation by some of the most skilled legal minds in the state and after every point in the affair that has been made public has been discussed & threshed out by thousands of citizens, the case of the state v. Leo M. Frank, charged with the murder of little Mary Phagan, will be called at 9 o'clock today..." with much more (see).
A great display issue with this rare front page photo of Frank, plus it announces the beginning of the trial, being held in Atlanta where this newspaper was published. This is the complete issue which has little margin wear, otherwise in good condition. Should be handled with care.
