Original Tipton cabinet card of the Company F (Vermont), 1st Berdan's U.S. Sharpshooters monument in Pitzer's Woods at Gettysburg, PA. Card is in good shape with the edges clipped.
Company F was raised in Vermont in the late summer of 1861 and fought with the Army of the Potomac until late 1864 when the 1st U.S.S.S. was disbanded. On July 2nd, 1863 at Gettysburg Company F was among four companies (D, E, F, & I) deployed forward of their skirmish line forward of Emmitsburg Road, with the 3rd Maine Infantry as support, to Pitzer's Woods to scout for Confederate forces. Colonel Hiram Berdan accompanied the scouting party and deployed the four companies as skirmishers into the woods and then wheeled them to face General Cadmus Wilcox's Alabamians who were taking position in the vicinity. Having accomplished the goal of the scouting party, Berdan ordered the men to fire upon the Confederates rather than falling back. What ensued was an intense firefight that lasted from between 10 and 20 minutes and resulted in the loss of 1 officer killed, 2 officers wounded, 16 enlisted men killed/wounded/missing for the sharpshooters, and 48 men killed/wounded/missing for the 3rd Maine Infantry. After the firefight the force retreated to their lines near the Peach Orchard. NOTE: I will be unavailable to answer your questions from between March 29th and April 1st. I will return on April 2nd and will address any questions, concerns, requests, etc. at that time. Thank you! |
