COUESNON FLUGELHORN FROM THE 1970'S (MY BEST GUESS) - SERIAL #52xxx
The Couesnon flugelhorn has been the holy grail of flugel's for jazz players for decades. Everybody from Freddie Hubbard to Donald Byrd to Tom Harrell to Eddie Henderson to Ingrid Jensen to Roger Ingram plays a Couesnon. They do so because of the SOUND. The Couesnon is famous for a light flugel sound that isn't too tubby. This makes it perfectly suited for jazz, as you can get around the horn and play your 8th and 16th note lines without them sounding mushy but it'll still be obvious that you've switched to "the big horn", as Art Farmer used to call it. It's very hard to date these horns, as the original records went up in flames in a factory fire in 1969 (see this aritcle from Dallas Music for more information). My best guess is that this horn is from the 1970's, as it's within a couple 100 serial numbers as the one I play, which I bought from the original owner with the documentation saying it was from 1972. This horn has that distinct and beautiful Couesnon sound. I tried to be as detailed with the photos as I could to show you the dents and blemishes as best as possible. There are a few dents you'll want to have taken out, but it'd wouldn't take much if you have a good repair guy in your area. There is one valve cap that is not original but I've seen sets of Couesnon valve caps on eBay for around $25-35 dollars. And the leadpipe receiver needs to be adjusted slightly. With a little TLC it'll be your favorite horn for years to come. Please let me know if you have any questions. I'd be happy to answer them to the best of my abilities. Happy bidding! |
