How is the Raven Eye Custom Takedown Screws Kit different

from the others available?

Þ     The Raven Eye Custom product is a “Kit”, not just a screw.  It includes

  many extras that are not included in the other brands such as the vibration

  dampening rings and the snap caps.

Þ     The length of the screw has been maximized to provide the most stability

while preventing contact between the barrel and the takedown screw.

Other vendors offer a T-handle hex driver together with their takedown screw. 

I considered offering one, and here is the reasons that I included a basic hex wrench instead:

Reason #1:  The T-handle and a simple hex wrench will do the same job of providing a consistent torque to the takedown screw.

Reason #2:  In order to include a T-handle wrench in my kits, I would need to raise the price of the kit.  Instead of raising the price, I reasoned

it is better to let the consumer decide if they want the fancy wrench which they can buy on their own for about $1.25. 

A Common Question:  Will I have to drill out or otherwise modify my factory escutcheon to

use this product?  Absolutely not.   This part is a "DROP IN PART" that requires no work other

than unscrewing the old takedown screw, and screwing in the new.

BEWARE OF OTHER LISTINGS THAT SELL FULLY THREADED TAKEDOWN SCREWS!!  The factory Ruger ones, like the Raven Eye Custom screws,

are partially threaded.  If you use a fully threaded screw, YOU WILL DAMAGE THE THREADS IN THE ACTION AND THE ESCUTCHEON.

What is the purpose for replacing the factory v-block screws (barrel retaining screws)?

Þ            The shoulder of the screw is custom sized to match the V-Block, which helps the v-block remain straight, and more uniformly transfers forces

Þ                  The size of the hex socket has been reduced to help prevent over-torque, a condition that leads to inconsistent barrel / action harmonics

             There is an ideal torque, and tightening too much will damage the receiver and create uneven stresses.  Most feel that tighter is better, but this is not true! 

             The smaller hex wrench is sized to limit the maximum torque, which should not be more than 25 in-lb.

Þ            Hex sockets allow for consistent, repeatable torque

What is a bolt (or recoil) buffer and why is it one of the

most common upgrades for the Ruger ten twenty-two?

Þ           The factory Ruger 10/22 bolt buffer is made of steel.  Its purpose is to stop the bolt

  after the semi-automatic action has been reset.  It works well but has its disadvantages.

Þ           The Raven Eye Custom Bolt Buffer is made of an engineered urethane designed to

  dissipate the energy from the bolt impact.  The result is a reduction in noise and recoil.

Þ           While I would not consider the 10/22 to be loud or a gun or one with a lot of recoil, the

  effect of having the bolt buffer in place is significant.  Ask around, it is almost a universally upgraded component.

Þ           Bolt buffers increase the longevity of optics due to the reduction in shock

Þ           Installing the bolt buffer can be done in around 2 minutes.  This area of the rifle is

  accessible by simply removing the takedown screw and lifting the stock off. 

  That’s it!  No gunsmith required!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1.  Is this RED buffer visible from the assembled stock? 

No.  The bolt buffer is only visible when the stock is removed.  The only exception is on the Barracuda style aftermarket stock (not the factory stock), where some types may show some of the bolt buffer. 

2.  Is this part hard to replace?

The process involves removing a single screw and replacing the existing bolt stop pin with the new bolt buffer.  It can be done in around 2 minutes, and does not require a gunsmith.
