Fellowship of the Ring UK 1954 1st Edition 1st Impression!! J.R.R. Tolkien

This auction is for a rare first printing of the first UK edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring."  Published in 1954 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd., printed by Jarrold & Sons Limited.  This is one of only 3000 first impression copies printed. The book is in remarkably good condition, with bright red boards, dark red topstain, and bright gold gilt title to the spine.  Corners, as well as top and bottom of spine show very minor wear.  Only the slightest spine lean.  Internally, the book is very nice and clean.  It is free of inscriptions and markings of any sort.  There is a small 1.5" tear in the middle of the half title page, near the spine (see photo).  There is also some tanning to the front and rear free endpages that likely corresponds to where the dust jacket had been taped with cello-tape at some point.  However, this tanning is confined to these two pages and does not affect the text.  Other than these points, the book itself is beautiful.  The large fold-out map is present in the rear of the book, and it is in excellent condition, appearing unused.  The dust jacket for this book is original, though not in good condition.  It shows heavy repair with cello-tape in the past, and the front and rear flaps are detached.  There is significant loss at the top and bottom of the spine of the jacket.  Despite these problems, the jacket is unclipped and still bears the original price of 21s net, and restoration may be worthwhile.  Overall, this is a great example of a first impression Fellowship.  Please email for additional information or photos.
