3 Teotihuacan heads

size:  3.5 cm high

Pre-Columbian art of Mesoamerica covers a period of around 3500 years.

One of the most important high cultures, Teotihuacan in the Central Highlands of Mexico, appeared around 500 B.C. Between 0 and 200 A.D. an enormos city, with gigantic Pyramids of the sun and the moon, was built according to a grid plan so that its long north/south axis, The Street of the dead, focused  on the mountain Cerro Gordo to the north. It was here that an original myth developed, centring on the belief that this was the place where the cosmos and the present time cycle began.

Teotihuacan, or the city of the gods as the Aztecs later called it, became the largest city of all Mesoamerica with a population that exceeded 100,000 inhabitants. Many rulers, who had absolute power over life and death, as demonstrated by its colossal public works and continual human sacrifices, governed it. The military forces and trade links of the metropolis reached as far as Monte Alban, El Tajin, Kaminaljuyu and Tikal.

Beside enormous stone figures of god and impressive masks, a large number of small terracotta heads, the Ancient Faces, have been found , giving us an impression of how people looked.

Ancient Faces are figures, heads and animals made of various materials such as jade, serpentine, stone and terracotta. Many of the small figures played an important role in domestic rituals and were placed in the graves of the owners upon their death. Most well-preserved of the pre-columbian artifacts were little terracotta heads with their expressive faces.
