1975: der erste "Klon" eines Personal Computers

 

Der IMSAI 8080 war ein direkter Nachbau des sehr erfolgreichen 1. Personal Computer des MITS ALTAIR 8800. Die Firma IMS verbesserte das Design des Altair und verbaute z.B. ein stabileres Netzteil, bessere Lüftung, robustere Schalter usw. Der IMSAI wurde Ende 1975 vorgestellt und wurde ein großer Erfolg. In Europa ist das Gerät allerdings sehr selten.

Altair und IMSAI zählen zu den Personal Computern der 1. Generation. Zur 2. Generation zählen z.B. Apple II, Commodore PET 2001 und TRS-80 Model 1. Die 1. Generation hatte noch keine Tastatur und auch kein Betriebssystem eingebaut. Die Eingabe erfolgte via DIP Schalter mit denen binär Eingaben gemacht werden konnten. Als Ausgabe gab es auch keinen Monitor sondern Leuchtdioden - extrem spartanisch ;-)

Der IMSAI machte den S-100 BUS des Altair so richtig zum Erfolg. Zum ersten Mal wurde ein Design kopiert und der "Nachbau" wurde sogar erfolgreicher als das Original.

Der angebotene IMSAI ist in gutem Zustand. Der Deckel hat ein paar leichte Flecken (siehe Fotos) - insgesamt ist das Gerät für einen 35 Jahre alten Rechner noch in sehr gutem Zustand. Das allerbeste ist - er fährt hoch und zeigt blinkende Lichter am Display!

Es ist ein großes Wunder daß das Netzteil mit den riesigen Kondensatoren noch funktioniert. Er läuft natürlich auf 110 Volt (ein simpler Konverter für 230 Volt wird benötigt; 200 Watt reichen aus). Ich hatte den IMSAI in den letzten Wochen mehrmals in Betrieb.

Leider kenne ich mich mit S-100 Rechnern momentan noch zuwenig aus um sagen zu können, ob der Rechner 100% funktioniert und richtig rechnet. Am besten sieht man den Zustand am Video unten. Jedenfalls bietet das Gerät eine gute Basis für eine Restauration.

Verbaut sind 3 S-100 Karten; davon sind 2 Memory Boards. Das CPU Board ist das original IMSAI MPU-A Rev. 4 CPU Board! Verbaut ist das Original IMSAI Motherboard (ist keine Selbstverständlichkeit!) und die original Seriennummer Plakette ist ebenfalls vorhanden.

the IMSAI is booting and seems to work! I can not say if it is calculating right but the power supply worked over hours and shows blinking lights. Case cover has some slight discoloration. Please see the video and pictures for the condition. It runs on 110 Volt. Optical in good conditon for its age (35 years!!) 3 S-100 cards are included: 2x memory boards and an origianl IMSAI MPU-A rev. 4 CPU board.
