This is a Hone-o-drive, an overdrive made by Hone in the 60's/70's. Used widely on Yenko and Baldwin Motion cars to make them more streetable. I picked it up to use in my 59 Chevy, but have since decided to do a trans swap instead....so it needs to go to a new home.

Here's what I know about it--- It's a 300 series unit, meaning it's a universal model. It attaches to the back of your trans via the U-joint, then your driveshaft is shortened and the yoke goes into this unit.

I do not have the shifter for it, but it's just basically a push/pull lever to actuate the overdrive. I've not run this at all, but it turns over freely by hand, the shift lever works and changes the overdrive from 1-1 to 1.43-1. It will need a new speedo cable, and the vent cap is broken (it's plastic). It has some rust on the outer steel pieces. I would clean the yolk splines up a bit and of course replace all the seals and such before use, as it's been sitting for quite some time.

I also have the crossmember for mounting that is shown in the picture as well. No clue what the mounting was originally for. If you DON'T want the crossmember mount, let me know and I'll refund some of the shipping money, as the box will be much smaller without it.

In the late 1960's, Fred Hone marketed and sold the Hone-O-Drive, an overdrive unit he had been developing for four years. Opening the Hone Manufacturing Company in Santa Fe Springs, California, Fred designed and built this self-contained, fully lubricated, 2-speed synchromesh planetary transmission that is manually shifted from 1:1 Direct Drive to a 1.43:1 (or 1.47:1, depending on which article you read) Overdrive. This effectively changed a car with a 4.11 rear axle ratio into one with a 2.87 ratio. Engagement/disengagement is supposed to be available at any time with no neutral or freewheeling. You just ease off the throttle for a moment, to lighten the drivetrain load, and then move the shift lever.

The Hone-O-Drive case is aircraft-grade, heat-treated 356T6 cast aluminum, while the gears are heat-treated, high quality steel with helical teeth to minimize noise.

Shafts are of special steel with heavy-duty splines.
