I purchased this beautiful shawl 20 years ago in an antique market in Oxford, England. I know only what I was told at the time about it, but based on other garments I have seen at vintage clothing shows since then, I believe the seller was accurate. Her description: "This shawl is made from silk. It is from the period of about 1890 to 1910. It is probably Spanish in origin. " Based on the lovely sheen of the threads, I do believe it is silk. I have worn it several times, and it is a show stopper. It is in excellent shape for a lace garment approximately 100 years old. The last 3 photos show the only breaks I could find in the lace. (My camera was misbehaving on the photo of the back. That photo does not reflect the true color of the shawl. ) Measurements are:
Length (back and front are the same): 28 to 29 inches Width around bottom: 104 inches
NOTE: I just an an email from a very kind Ebayer, who tells me that this is Maltese lace. This is a type of bobbin lace made on the island of Malta, which is located in the Mediterranean. For more info and some lovely examples, go to this blog about it: http://fairyfiligree.blogspot.com/2010/04/maltese-lace.html
