You are
bidding on a museum quality vintage bowl by the late renowned potter and glaze
master Harding Black.
DESCRIPTION: This stellar mid-1950’s bowl finds Harding
Black at the absolute peak of his ceramic prowess. In keeping with the potter’s methodology, a
lovely simple form serves as a canvas for a breathtaking
display of glaze wizardry.
The
interior center of the bowl has a jewel-like, glassy sang de boeuf glaze that
flows into a dark green glaze before running to chocolate brown around the
rim. (The green glaze resumes on the
underside of the pot.) These glazes
serves as a backdrop for a masterfully executed decorative pattern of raised
smoky white Y-shaped adornments outlined in layers of brown and green. (There is also one well-placed white circle
at the center.)
This
highly collectible bowl measures 9 ¼” in diameter and stands 2” high at the
rim. It is in vintage mint condition- no
chips, cracks or repairs- and is signed and dated (1954) on the interior of the
foot ring.
ABOUT HARDING BLACK: The late Harding Black spent over 60 years
throwing pots and making ceramic pieces in San Antonio, Texas. He is best known for his beautiful glazes and
is considered by many to be a ceramics pioneer and one of the significant
historical figures in 20th century American ceramics. He was self-taught and devoted his life to
researching the science of glaze technology.
Mr. Black was able to discover the methods to duplicate many historical
glazes, including the ancient Chinese glazes, such as chun, flambé, oxblood and
oil spot. Appreciation (and demand) for
his work has surged in recent years.
SHIPPING: Winning bidder pays for insured USPS Priority
shipping. Winning New York bidder pays
applicable state sales tax. International
shipping charge is $55. Winning international bidders are
responsible for any import taxes imposed by their particular country. Payment via PAYPAL is due within five days of
the end of the auction. THANKS for
looking and GOOD LUCK.
