Name:  Amy Vanderbilt's New Complete Book Of Etiquette - A Guide To Gracious Living

Author:  Amy Vanderbilt  - drawings by Fred McCarroll, Mary Suzuki & Andrew Warhol

Publishing Company:  Doubleday & Company, Inc. 1952, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1058, 1963, 1967 by The Daisyfields Corportation

Copyright & Details:    1952, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1058, 1963, 1967 by The Daisyfields Corportation

Attributes:  Joel Hilliker -  "It is called Amy Vanderbilt’s New Complete Book of Etiquette. It was published in 1952; my copy was last updated in 1963. It’s not even 50 years old—and yet, the rules of social graces it details seem to represent some exotic historical epoch. It helped me realize just how casual and low-minded our culture has become—and how quickly. In America in particular, it seems we pride ourselves on our uncouthness; we exalt the rude and the base.

I found one bit in this book extremely helpful: a list of rules children should be taught on dinner table conduct. Here, summarized from Amy Vanderbilt in 1963, are some things we should not do at the table:

Sit down to a meal unwashed and uncombed or improperly dressed.

Tilt our chairs or push them back from the table with all our body weight on them.

Tuck in a napkin, nor suck our fingers instead of wiping them on a napkin.

Lounge on the dinner table, including putting our elbows on it or sitting back on our spines. (Apparently it is okay to put elbows—preferably one—on the table between courses.)

— Put more than a manageable mouthful in our mouths at one time.

— Chew with our mouths open or with obvious noise or lip-smacking.

— Speak unnecessarily loudly, or chatter incessantly.

— Behave noisily and conspicuously.

— Burp, belch, sneeze or cough without attempting to turn away from others, and then only behind the cupped hand or a clean handkerchief.

— Scratch, pick the teeth, spit, comb the hair, or tend the nails.

— Pull our finger joints, drum our fingers, or indulge in any similar irritating little habits that set people’s teeth on edge.

— Leave a spoon in a cup, or eat with a knife.

— Interrupt a conversation—except for an important reason and then only after asking permission to speak."

Name:  The Curtis Caper

Author:  Joseph C. Goulden

Publishing Company:  G. P. Putnam's Sons  New York

Copyright & Details:  1965 by Joseph C. Goulden

Attributes:  "The Curtis Caper is not a formal history, nor an authorized one, of the Curtis Publishing Company.  Nor does it purport to be a complete story.  "The real history is going to have to be written by a psychiatrist," Cary W. Bok, grandson of founder Cyrus Curtis, remarked one day.  Rather, The Curtis Caper is reporter's attempt to analyze, through the words of the principals who were willing to talk, the reasons Curtis Publishing Company got into the situation it did in the late 1950's and early 1960's, and what happened thereafter.  As such, it is replete with hindsight and second-guessing, and abounds with Curtis' faults rather that Curtis' virtues.  Curtis writes its own history weekly and monthly with its magazines.  This story is about the men and women who edited the magazines, sold advertising space in them, and printed them, and the effect their actions and non-actions had upon the company that owned them."

Name:  Battles Lost & Won  Great Campaigns of World War II

Author:  Hanson W. Baldwin

Publisher:  Harper & Row

Copyright & Details:  1966 by Hanson W. Baldwin   Book Club Edition

Attributes:   "The military editor and analyst of the New York Times evaluates eleven crucial battles of the Second World War, analyzing what happened in each and why, as well as the larger results. Describing his purpose in this volume, Mr. Baldwin says: "The eleven selected battles present a cross-section of the world's greatest war--from the Polish campaign, where blitzkrieg was born, to Okinawa, 'the last battle,' where kamikaze portended the coming menace of the missile. Each battle described was, in fact, more than a battle; each was so extensive in time and space and comprised so many separate episodes of struggle that each transcended the older meaning of the world 'battle' and was, in essence, a campaign. Yet each was an entity; many were a turning point; upon some, the scales of history rested."

Author:  Introduction by Phoebe Pool   Notes & Catalogue by Sandra Orienti

Publishing Company:  Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Publishers New York

Copyright & Details:   Copyright in Italy by Rizzoli Editore, 1967

Attributes:   "Edouard Manet
French, 1832-1883
Edouard Manet drew his subject matter from modern life. This untraditional approach and his free handling of paint make him an unconventional, groundbreaking painter who was an important model for the impressionists. He considered himself a realist painter.

Intense study of paintings by the Spaniard Diego Velázquez eventually led Manet to reject academicism. His radical new style was founded on strongly contrasting light and shadow, a restricted palette in which black was very important, and on painting directly from the model. Despite his avant-garde style, Manet was determined to exhibit at the Salon. However, his deliberately shocking Déjeuner sur l'herbe (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) was rejected and created a sensation when it was exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in 1863. It was sharply criticized by academic factions but praised by avant-garde painters and writers. The Railway, though accepted in the Salon, sparked renewed controversy.

In Paris Manet associated with modernist writers, notably Charles-Pierre Baudelaire and Emile Zola, and regularly gathered at the Café Guerbois with young artists and authors. In 1869, probably influenced by his sister-in-law Berthe Morisot, Manet began painting outdoors. He produced impressionist landscapes and street scenes inspired directly by Claude Monet's example.

Manet nevertheless declined offers to exhibit with the impressionists in 1874; he still sought unqualified approval from the Salon. He achieved this goal only in 1882 with two portraits symbolizing the seasons."

Author:  Leland E. Hinsie

Publishing Company:  W. W. Norton & Company

Copyright & Details:  1945 by W. W. Norton & Company

Attributes:  "With this volume Dr. Hinsie has entered the field of semi-popular writing and has produced a book which will be of lasting interest, not only to anyone dealing with the problems of humanity but in some instances to the patients themselves.

Bibliotherapy as a treatment technique has frequently been recommended but has been usually disapproved because of the scarcity of books which could be given freely to patients to read. The author has overcome this problem insofar as psychosomatic conditions are concerned in giving us a book based on his extensive psychosomatic and psychiatric experience, which is sufficiently readable to interest the average patient and scientifically sound enough to satisfy the most rigid clinician. The author discusses the emotional development of the individual and follows this with a chapter on the roots of psychosomatic disorders in which he clearly depicts the development of psychosomatic symptoms."

Gillian Cross does the job thoroughly -- not only does she give a detailed, insightful, act-by-act summary of the operas, but also provides a listing of the characters, the vocal types that should play them, the setting, the time, and a short biography of the composer (Strauss, Mozart, Verdi and many others).

The summaries of all these operas, from "Aida" to Verdi's retelling of "Otello," is also rounded by a trio of essays: "How to Enjoy An Opera," which might help wary newcomers be more open-minded about operas as a whole, "A Brief History of Opera," and "The Ballet of Opera."
