WEIGHING 45 GRAMS INCLUDING THE MOVEMENT!!!
This fine and extremely rare antique 9ct gold pocket watch and travel/bedside clock has a rectangular form with rounded corners. The case measures 4.5cms (45mm or 1 and 3/4 inches) square. It is in really lovely condition and has the most fantastic striped and engine turned decoration to both the front and back. There is very little wear to the decoration, and only 2 slight small dings and one 'outie' ding to the case back. This fine antique travel clock is a very good gauge of gold, fine quality and in excellent condition.
The clock dial may be viewed via the circular window incorporated in the front cover. Alternatively, the spring hinged cover may be opened, creating a stand to support the clock when displayed on a flat surface. The case is fully hallmarked for solid 9 carat gold on its inside (see pics) All of the case is solid 9 carat gold including the hinges ( 2 hallmarks on the case and 1 on the loop) apart from the watch case back which looks like metal but may be unmarked silver or even platinum. The makers mark is struck as H.M. which seems to be Henry Matthews (Birmingham 1880-1930) For the sake of descriptive purposes I will state that it is white metal. The clock is fitted with FULLY HALLMARKED solid 9 carat gold a ring loop attachment from which it may be suspended if so desired.
The clock face is white enamel with bold hourly numerals bordered with minute markers. It has luminescent original paint on the numerals and the same on the cathedral style beautiful Art deco hands. The paint has browned but is in good condition. The bezel is coin edged and is gold. The dial has a light patina and some light dirt marks. It is all original and has no evidence of any refinishing. The movement is an original wristwatch movement which is 15 jewels and Swiss made. The movement is in working order and is keeping time to +- 3 mins per 24 hours. A service would be recommended for optimum performance. his would have been an incredibly expensive luxury in its day, probably owned by a gentleman or lady with some standing in society. rarity in this type of condition.
Please remember that vintage watches have survived for many decades by
being treated well. Vintage watches are not for wearing while doing yard work,
working out, or swimming. Vintage watches cannot keep time like their quartz
cousins and will need altering on average between +-2 to +-5 mins per day. They
are a little more destructible than modern watches. Vintage watches also
require periodic service and cleaning. Every couple of years, they would like
their 20,000 mile checkup, oil change, and general service. By taking care of
your vintage watch, you will have years of great service, and a quality heirloom
to pass to another generation.
