Were only human: Napa Cabernet and 60% savings is a gorgeous sound for the ears of any wine-lover but when that combination applies to the work inspired (and mentored) by the enologist of international renown, André Tchelistcheff, the excitement gets almost palpable. Big, bold Napa production with great strength and explosive fruit, its not to be missed for those who enjoy depth, structure, and cellar-worthiness with a price point thats nearly impossible to overlook.
Inside Fact: André Tchelistcheff was, as New York Times described in his obituary, a seminal figure in the modern California wine industry. The collaborator to Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de Latour, the refugee and enologist of international renown also consulted for Robert Mondavi, Louis M. Martini, Franciscan Vineyards, Firestone, Jordan and Buena Vista in California, and with wineries in Washington State and in Italy. He passed away in 1994 at the age of 92.
I have to say that this producer never ceases to amaze me with their quality and the pricing that they charge us. They have a combination of great vineyards in Calistoga in Napa Valley (think neighbors with Montelena) and the talented winemaker, Allison Green Doran, who I met at Firestone Vineyards in the late 80's. Together, they've produced some stunning values, ones that our Sourcing Team just can't say no to.
The 2003 Cream Label Cabernet is the best we've seen from them yet and it totally qualifies as the deal of the week. These vineyards, some planted in 1971, have produced this Cabernet with loads of lush, spicy fruit. Deeply colored and fragrent, with flavors of black cherry, red fruits and plum blending nicely with the creaminess of new the new oak barrels they've aged the wine in. Supple and fairly plush, the wine is very well balanced, with a touch of spiciness from the percentage of Petite Verdot they've added to keep it interesting. This wine will certainly be a great drink for at least another 5-7 years. At this price, it's easy to afford to buy a few extra bottles and enjoy over a good period of time. Cabernet lovers rejoice! -PM
The nose has nicely evolved aromas of plum and cedar with deeper black cherry notes. The palate has a restrained entry of rich push plum mid-palate finishing with explosions of cherry jam and serious oak.
Bittersweet chocolate or just a nice grilled burger; roast rabbit or rabbit paté.
