Not only is this book an interesting autobiography, but it offers a great deal of insight into how a horse interprets and reacts to human behavior from its natural (instinctive) point of view. This information allows a handler/rider to address the horse in a manner which will bring out the desired behavior with minimal conflict. While not every discovery in the book is as brand new as the author seems to think (such as the submissive chewing or Unterlegenheitsgebaerde)and the patented "Join-up" method is not that different from a normal session in the round pen, it is as good a guide to starting a horse as most (but does not include equitation lessons). Nevetheles, the writing and methods are highly subjective and I prefer to take a few suggestioms from the book rather than using it as a strict training regimen.Read full review
This is a fabulous book for anyone who owns and loves horses. Monty studied the wild mustangs in their natural setting and observed their rich nonverbal communication with one another. He has codified that language into a simple set of behavioral cues that vastly improves the relationship between horses and humans. I plan to use his methods to "start" the 10 young colts in our weaning pasture. I've already used it with one young colt who was absolutely wild with fear and needed to go to the vet. In less than 30 minutes that baby was calm and trusting, easy to load into the horse trailer and the vets at UGA commented on how easy he was to work with. If you love horses, read this book. It will forever change the way you interact with your horses.
I bought this for my 9 year old daughter who loves horses. The book kept her interest and she would tell me everything she learned about horse behavior in the book.

My brother was going through a very difficult divorce. He was looking for something uplifting and I had read this book several years before. It's about a colorblind man who was badly abused by his father for demonstrating an exceptional ability to understand animals. This author, Monty Roberts, is in my mind a modern day hero ot the old classic style. He not only rose from abuse, but he now trains all of Queen Elizabeth's horses. The best thing about the author is that he isn't bitter. This book offers hope for the human heart. Verleen Ukiah, CA
This autobiography by Monty Roberts is a fascinating (and sometimes heart-breaking) look into the life a man who devoted all his skill and energy to making a better life for horses, and the people who own them. What a feeling of admiration for this amazing human being. Loved the connection with Queen Elizabeth II, wow that experiences came from that. I plan to read it again soon.
