Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of the Latter Day Saints:  carefully selected from the revelations of God, and compiled by Joseph Smith Junior, Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams, [Presiding Elders of Said Church]. Proprietors. Kirtland, Ohio.  Printed by F. G. Williams & Co. for the proprietors. 1835.

Fourteen months after the Independence press was destroyed, the elders of the Church launched a second effort to print Joseph Smith's revelations in book form.  The first part of the book (pp. [5]-74) consists of the seven "Lectures on Faith". Delivered before the school of the elders in Kirtland the preceding winter, these lectures cover such basic doctrines as the necessity of faith; the attributes of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost; man's relationship with God; and the nature of salvation.  The second part (pp. [75]-257) contains one hundred revelations spanning the period from July 1828 to March 28, 1835.  (A Descriptive Bibliography of the Mormon Church, Vol. 1, Peter Crawley, 1997. pp. 54-57.)

The first edition Doctrine and Covenants is extremely scarce and rare.  By comparison, there are approximately 500 surviving copies of the first edition Book of Mormon.  However, for every nine surviving copies of the first edition Book of Mormon there is only one surviving copy of the first edition Doctrine and Covenants.  Fewer than seventy-five copies have survived--perhaps as few as fifty.

In comparison to the other surviving copies, this is an exceptional copy. The pages don't show as much foxing as is normally seen. The text on this copy collates complete.  From a close examination of the title page, it appears that this copy has a title page that was reset at some point--perhaps in the 1880s.  It also appears that the margins were trimmed and the edges colored yellow--probably at the same time.  The binding also appears to be from that period (mid to late-1800s).  The label on the spine was also added at a later date.  There are some annotations made in pencil by a previous owner, however, other than that, this is a very nice copy--the text is as clean as any other copy in the world.

There is an ownership inscription in the front that reads "Daniel Anderson".  The writing appears to be in late 19th-century--possibly early 20th-century hand.  There are about two dozen notations throughout the margins of the book--a couple of them claiming that prophecies were not true--so, in all likelihood the early owner of this book was a disaffected Mormon or not associated with the Mormon Church.  This could also have something to do with the nice condition of the book--as it shows little wear compared to most copies.

This book is housed in an attractive full-leather protective clamshell case.  Although this lovely copy has a few flaws, it is priced well below market based on the number available.  I have another copy that is all original and collates complete for $225,000.   This copy--perhaps the only one to come on the market this year--is priced at $125,000.  Don't miss this opportunity.

I specialize in Mormon-related books and documents--especially first edition copies of the Book of Mormon. You can see a list of other items that I have acquired by clicking on "me" above (next to "threenephites").   Feel free to contact me with any questions.
