We eBay as a hobby!  If you like this item - WATCH IT NOW - We reduce our opening bids every week!  If you just can't wait until next week - let us know that you'd like to win it now!  If we get several messages, or if there are several watchers, we might surprise everyone by lowering the opening bid BEFORE the last 24 hours.  It can be a fun gamble!  Good Luck!

This is an extremely exciting poster!  We've been looking for a First Edition "Phantom Ski Team" to sell for years!  Unfortunately, this poster isn't ours.  We are selling it on behalf of a friend.  It's actually far more rare than the 1972 version that we are selling, and it should be priced higher, but we aren't the boss.

Extremely Rare: 1971 FIRST EDITION - GENE HOFFMAN PRINTING.  Original.  Not a reproduction.  Guaranteed 41+ years old.  Designed to promote the 1972 Bond Issue.  Known as an "Olympic Phantom", or more specifically as the "Denver Phantom", the "Colorado Phantom", or as the "Phantom Ski Team", because the Olympics were never actually held in Colorado!  Printed by Gene Hoffman as a public service in the fall of 1971.  The design was then taken up and printing continued under the direction of the Denver Olympic Committee in the spring and summer of 1972.

Large: 19" by 34"  No folds.  No tears.  No creases.  Faint surface crinkles and paper waviness.  Slight tape stain over gloved hand.  Thin areas to the paper on back, in five places, where tape once was taken off.  (We've darkened the verso photo so you can see the tape marks better).  Perfectly imaginative artwork to use the ski poles for the Olympic rings!  Outstandingly brilliant, strong, and vivid colors on eggshell white paper.  Ships rolled and very well protected.

WE DISCOVERED THE FOLLOWING DURING OUR RESEARCH:

In 1970, Denver won the bid to host the Winter Olympics for 1976.  There was only one catch.  Money would need to be raised locally, from a statewide bond issue, to pay for the construction.

This poster was printed early in the spring of 1972 to sell the idea to the Colorado voters.  Everyone was excited - except the citizens of Colorado!  Concerns about increasing taxes, worries about environmental impact, and an ugly political fight prompted voters to reject the bid in November, 1972.  The Olympic Committee scrambled to move the games back to Innsbruck, Austria.

It is widely accepted that Colorado will never be asked to host the Olympic Games again!  After all, it was the first, last, and only time in history that anyone refused the honor.
