History:   The material is: Copper-Nickel Clad Copper

Following the Franklin Half Dollar, the Kennedy Half Dollar was first minted in 1964.

The 1964 issue was made of 90% silver, like the earlier Franklin Half Dollar. The next year the silver content was reduced to 40% when a clad composition was put into use. The composition was again changed in 1971 when silver was eliminated from the coin and the copper-nickel clad common to the dollar, dime and quarter was used. Later, in 1976, special commemorative coins were issued in both copper-nickel and in 40% silver. And starting in 1992 the mint began making proof half dollars out of both copper-nickel and 90% silver.
