Phil Bolger designed leeboard spritsail cruising canoe - made famous by Ida Little and Michael Walsh who built the first one in 1979-80, named her "Dugong", and cruised her for four years in the Florida Keys, Florida Bay, and Coastal Georgia.  It was also cruised for one summer in Canada's Hudson Bay.  Much of what they learned while cruising Dugong they featured in their excellent book, Beachcruising and Coastal Camping, first published in 1992 and still in print - see Amazon.

Chapter 8 titled "Cruising Canoe" in Phil Bolger's out-of-print book, Different Boats, discusses the history and purpose of the design along with engineering drawings, construction detail, and the sail plan.  It is listed as Phil Bolger design # 365.  There were only two of these vessels built - the first by Ida Little and Michael Walsh, and this one which is number 2 and constructed in 1987-88 in Kentwood, Louisiana.  This boat was recently shown at the Madisonville, LA Wooden Boat Festival and was determined the "Most Unusual Sailboat" of the show.

The hull is three courses of 6" by 1/8" Western Red Cedar, with the Gougeon West Epoxy treatment with the inner and outer courses of Cedar at 45 degrees and sheathed on the outside in fiberglas cloth. Stout is an understatement for this boat.  It is 28' overall in length, 26' on the waterline, 5'4" in beam, draws only 8" and 3' with the leeboards down.  It is a sprit rigged sloop with two sprits and the mast is 16' as are the sprits.  Under the aft and fore decks are foam filled water tight compartments. The Cockpit is 8' in length and the cabin area is 5' by 6'6" with two ports on each side and an opening forward hatch and companionway.

It is a very stable vessel with the high sides. Off the wind and downwind it flies.  It struggles a bit going to the wind as you would expect with no keel and only shallow leeboards.  She does not need a reef in the main until about 18 mph and is then under control until about 28 mph. After that she sails well with only the jib pulling.

Phil Bolger said the following in his update to Different Boats - "Fast, able, lively, and graceful. Just about the minimum of things to go wrong, and tolerant of divided attention."

The boat has recently undergone a complete refreshment and is in new to better than new condition throughout.  The Spritsail and Jib are both new.  There is a custom designed trailer with dual-axles and good radial tires.  It has a stainless steel small engine mount on the port rear side and a small electric motor.  Should you have question please call at 337-288-2985.  I can deliver the boat to any continental US location for cost.
