1986 Ibanez Proline PL1770 (JAPAN)
This model does not come up very often for sale on eBay or anywhere else. This one weighs only 7.6 pounds and was made in JAPAN (super high quality materials and workmanship, especially the neck, frets, and electronics)! The Pro-Line series of guitars first appeared on the market in 1985 as the PR1440, PR1550, and PR1660. The PR1440 was available in Red while the PR1550 was available in pure white finish. All of these models had black hardware, pickups, and knobs.
Product lineup
  • 1985
    • PR1440
    • PR1550
    • PR1660
  • 1986
    • PL1770
    • PL1880
    • PL2550
    • PL2660
    • PL5050
The PR1440 and 1550 featured two Ibanez S7FT single coil pickups and one Ibanez humbucking double coil pickup by the bridge, a volume and tone/push knob and 3 separate switches in place of a 3-way pickup selector(tone/push knob split the humbucker). The PR1660 on the other hand had two Ibanez V-5 pickups and were the first guitars to use these pickup. They also had one volume switch and one tone switch and a 3-way pickup selector as opposed to the separate switches used on the 1440 and 1550 models. The necks on all the models were made of maple and oil-finished.
In 1986 Ibanez took a step up with the Pro-Line series by making the bodies smaller, adding jumbo frets, preset switch systems, new colors, licensed Floyd Rose locking tremolo, and adding a bass model to the line. The new models that were introduced were the PL1770, PL1880, PL2550, PL2660, and the PL5050 bass guitar. New colors that were on the market in 1986 were Black, Metallic Copper, Gold Pearl, and Silver Pearl for the PL1770; Natural Wood and Walnut Finishes For the PL1880; Black, Cherry Ice, Gold Pearl, and Silver Pearl Finishes for the PL2550; Black, Cherry Ice and Pearl finishes for the PL2660 and Gun Metal and Pearl finishes for the PL5050.
But the expansion would not last as Ibanez would have to go through a lawsuit that would lead to the demise of the series. In 1986 Jackson Guitars sued Ibanez concerning the PL2660 guitar. Jackson said that this guitar was a virtual copy of Jackson's Randy Rhoads Guitar. After 1986 no more Pro-Line guitars were produced.
This specific guitar is a 1986 PL1770 serial number C862130 (ONE YEAR ONLY MODEL). There are several back scratches (see closeup photos), but no body wood showing. It is 100% for originality and comes with what appears to be the factory Ibanez logo rectangular hardshell case with Excelsior USA latches, the case key and factory black Schaller Straplocks in the case pocket. The FLAT RADIUS THIN neck (super fast) has an EBONY fretboard, 22 LARGE frets, 3-ply w/b/w neck binding, and a non-gloss oil finish. The factory tuning machines are Smooth Tuner II Ibanez keys. The lead pickup is an Ibanez Ibz humbucker (switchable with a push-switch in the Master Tone knob) and the middle and neck pickups are 7FT models. The 4-bolt neckplate says “Ibanez C862130 MADE IN JAPAN”. This guitar is one of the most versatile instruments ever made and can even sound like an acoustic guitar. There is a traditional 5-way pickup selector and a 5-button setup-the 3 white buttons are for each pickup, the left black button is for Duo-Sound, and the right black button is the Preset On/Off switch (up is off, in which case it is a regular 3-pickup guitar with a 5-way switch). There is a wealth of information on www.jemsite.com. Most of the items we sell are used. Therefore, they may exhibit at least the minimal amount of wear one would expect on a used musical instrument or accessory for the item's age. We try to disclose any defects or cosmetic issues to the best of our abilities and show them in closeup pictures on the auction site. However, it is impossible to note every nick and scratch on a used instrument or accessory. We welcome any questions and we are more than happy to answer them. If something in the description or photographs is unclear, please ask before bidding. Local pickup preferred at our north-central Florida store (Ocala), but shipping can GLADLY be arranged. WE USE NEW BOXES! We ship only to the 48 United States. For calculating shipping, the weight is 30 pounds, dimensions are 50 inches x 20 inches x 8 inches. Our zip code is 34474. Add for insurance based on the purchase price. Item must be paid for within 3 days. Bidders must have at least 5 positive feedbacks with a 98% positive rating. Please check our feedbacks and the individual prices of our sales.
